Recently read an article called “Orlan Self Santification” (Researchers: Monique Nahas, Herve Huitric). Here is my intake on what I think art is and what I think of Orlan and her work.
What is art? It is a human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature. According to this interpretation, art is a free for all, left to the motivations of those interpreting its meaning. There is such a wide gap of interpretation in our times because of various motivations or expressions. But, there has always been basically two types. Art inspired by a higher level of conciseness and a desire to express ones self in a way to imitate the creator or creative force in the individual, to express love, beauty, or ones passion. The other type is very similar but void of the recognition of a higher source of power other than ones self, and the world around them, with a belief that they themselves are the creator, rather than the instrument of a greater creative force.
A prime example of the ladder in which I described is the expressionist who so calls herself Saint-Orlan. Who believes that there is nothing higher to answer to other than herself, and yet she leans on established recognized icons of the past such as, the catholic church, declaring herself a saint, Greek mythology, declaring herself a goddess, so on and so forth. Though Orlan is not alone in her thought process, there are others who wish to become such a person as herself. As for myself, this work of art, although debatable, there is a dividing line between the two type of expressionist. The author of this article appear to write in favor of Orlans work, for example comparing her to Joan of Arc, which is as abstract as the painting of the human body by Picasso. Art finds its audiences, and those who express themselves the loudest or with the broadest bands of media get the most attention, but are not necessarily the finest artists or true to the original expression or spirit of art. Most modern art truly reflects the degradation of man and his world. In short this art is to be considered “a new and wonderful creation”, as for myself I consider it to be nothing of the sort, but as some mentally deranged, perversion of art. In the end nothing is new under the sun.
