This article is about the first day of school, and a mother’s struggle to let go.

We made our through the gates and round to the back of the school where the two reception classes were located. There were lots of other parents and their children waiting to be allowed into the classes. Nigel stood with Sam ready to take him into Mrs Power’s class and I stood with Luke ready to take him into Mrs Knox’s class. The longer we waited the harder I had to fight to relax and chill out. Eventually the doors opened and we were allowed into the class. I helped Luke find his coat peg where he hung up his school bag. He then looked around and decided what activity he wanted to take part in. As soon as he settled down, I kissed him and we waved to each other. I left then not wanting to prolong the agony for either of us. Walking away I felt as if I was leaving two pieces of my heart behind as I thought of my sons. I kept going regardless however. This was a new era, a new chapter and the beginning of something great. I learned a tough lesson that day. To embrace the new we often have to let go of the old and the obsession with the way it was. Change is never easy, and it was hard to let go but through it all I have more clarity now. Our children are not really ours, they are precious and beautiful gifts we are given to take care of and equip for life’s challenges. Instead of worrying about them, we will do better if our love for them points them towards and prepares them for their destiny ahead. It is worth remembering they are the great men and women of tomorrow!
