This took place in the summer of 2008.

It was a very hot summer day in 2008.  Only 10:00 A.M. and already hot enough to make you sweat.  There was a construction crew next door working on the roof.  I had noticed them looking in my windows so I pulled down the blinds so they could not see in my house.  Why were they peeping in my windows in the first place? Were they trying to see some skin?

NO!  I was sitting on the love seat watching television, drinking my coffee trying to wake up.  Out of the corner of my eye I see the shadow of three construction crew members belly crawl to my house and use the outside spigot to fill their water cooler and belly crawl away.  I was astonished.  What gave them the right!  I quickly went to the back door and told them no.  I also told them if I caught them stealing water from me again I would call the police.

Now, if you knew me you would know that I am a caring, compassionate person.  Had they come to the door and asked I would have given them filtered water and ice out of the fridge, maybe I would have made them some lemonade, but the barbarians snuck over and stole water!

A couple days later I was outside watering my zucchini and they all stopped what they were doing, went to the back of their truck, grabbed their water and started drinking, staring me down the whole time.  The second time I came out to water they started talking.  Now I do not know exactly what they were saying because I do not speak Spanish but I do know what puta means.

What is this world coming to?  Do we really have to shut off the connection to keep people from stealing water from the outside spigot?  This is a sad state of mind we are living in if we think it is ok to steal and name call when we are caught.  I wonder what they would have thought of me if the story went different.  If they had asked permission, and I had given them something cold to drink, would they still feel like they could call me bad names. For some reason I think they would have.

We all need to realize that times are hard, for everyone.  We just can not steal what we think we need or want.  This is barbaric activity.  I so wanted to think that we live in a civilized society, but I guess I was sadly mistaken.  If you are reading this please listen to me.  Remember the Golden Rule: DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.  This little phrase can get you a long way in life.

I agree with you, our society is somehow going do the dogs. More severe cases of stealing do occurs in my neighborhood, orchids being pick up inside the gate, plants rooted up even empty water pails didn’t escape thieves attention. But you have clearly stated the golden rule w/c everyone must abhor.

My father was a preacher. He would have brought them cold drinks just to see how they reacted after their stunt. I think he enjoyed the awkwardness that he created.

It is so sad that the world is getting more and more like this, I have seen exactly this type of attitude increasingly.
