Our family tradition of collecting porcelain dolls.

Porcelain dolls have always had a special meaning in my family. It all began with my grandmother purchasing one for me each and every Christmas and birthday. It was continued with my cousins with me buying them one each Christmas. This meaningful and fun tradition has now moved on to include my daughter. My daughter of course is special in herself because she is mine; however there is something even more special about her.

My daughter was born on my 21st birthday, a doll in herself. She was the best “doll” I could ever have received. I passed my dolls on down to her and there they stand in her bedroom spread across her entertainment center and dressers and such. Aeris is only seven months old, but her doll collection has already grown by 15. It seems that every time I see a porcelain doll she doesn’t have yet I have to buy it. Our most recent purchase was from the Dollar General store.

They have all of their porcelain dolls on sale and I had gone in to buy a sippy cup and pass for Aeris and there they where, hundreds of tiny 2 and 3 inch dolls just waiting to take the car ride home and join their new family. I had to buy them, I couldn’t resist. I purchased 15 of the tiny dolls for a mere $10, so I knew my husband wouldn’t be that upset. It turned out that he thought it had been a good idea too because one day, in the future her collection would worth something.

Even if it was not worth anything monetary it would be worth countless memories of holidays and love. Buying the dolls reminds me of my grandmother and all the Christmas’s we had before she passed away. I feel that in continuing this tradition with my daughter that I am carrying on a very important tradition. I hope to continue this tradition even if it means having to build a room onto the house just for the dolls, then perhaps my husband wont fuss so much about how much room they take up. I look forward to having more children and perhaps granddaughters later down the road to begin the tradition with.
