My experience of giving birth.
I had no pain relief in hospital when I had my now 12 week old daughter but that was not by choice, it was due to how fast my labor was progressing. Lauren is my first child and so I was expecting a long labor like all my friends who have recently given birth, but no not me! Some might call me lucky, well most of you will my labor lasted just over an hour from my waters breaking to delivery. I had had light pains in my abdomen and stomach, a bit like period pains but they did not feel like what I had been told a contraction would feel like. It was Friday 3rd October 2008 one day after my due date. I had felt some Braxton Hicks contractions the night before so I knew it would not be long. My fiance went out for some shopping leaving me in bed asleep. When he came home I went to the toilet as I felt I needed to go and that is when my waters broke and within seconds I had my show, which was a lot worse than I was expecting. We had been told to expect an amount of blood in a mucousy discharge but not a gush of blood like I had, but that was probably with my waters breaking at around the same time. My fiance rang the labor ward who assured me it was just the show but asked me to come in for a check to see how fast labor was progressing with my waters breaking as well. We set off with my contractions now seaming to start and getting stronger by the minute. We made it to the hospital and up to the 6th floor in a lift (and I hate them). We entered the labor ward and I got on to a bed with a little difficulty. The midwife examined me through my screams of I want pain relief and was shocked to discover the babies head already started to show. As this was the case I had to endure the next 45 minutes or so of pain. Lauren was born at around 18:07 that evening. Yes it was painful but I am glad i did it naturally. I had to have stitches, this was partially because she came out like Super girl. After having the stitches I went for a shower and oops I nearly passed out.

As we did not know what we were having we did not have a name ready and so she was nameless for a day. On the Saturday evening while I was still in hospital we got out the baby name book and went through it cover to cover and chose in the end the name Lauren, as it is the female version of Lawrence and I feel that as my second name is Laverick which is derived from Lawrence it is the way to carry on tht name into the future as her Surname will be Cottam after her father.
