The life of my father as a Filipino soldier.

My father is a member of the Philipine Army, He is a local of Negros Occidental Philipines, He decided to join the army at his 20’s because  at that time in their place it’s hard to get a better job, He only step into college but he was not able to finish , So he decided to join the army for a job for his living, He then go to Cotabato to his aunt, his aunt  is the sister of her mother my grandmother, that time the husband of her aunt was a mayor in their place and has a son in the army ranking in major, who was a commander in a military training camp.  That’s why it is easy for my father to join the army. After months of training my father finish the training, and was assigned to jolo, sulu.

That time jolo sulu  was  a  dangerous place even now because of many rebels (muslim rebel). When my aunt knew that my father will be assign to jolo he beg to his husband not to send my father jolo, but  his husband said that it’s ok  thing will be fine, and his aunt couldn’t do anything but to agree. I don’t know why my father’s uncle agree to send me him to jolo, Maybe he just want for my father to experience what it is like if you are in a battlefield. So my father did ,at that time when my father report to his assigned unit he was at the rank of a draftee, before he can promote to private, but now there is no rank such as draftee in the army, you will be automatically in the rank of private. That time when my father was in jolo  there is an incident that change the atmosphere in jolo to a more dangerous atmosphere  , that place called the Pata island That incident was when a group of rebel negotiated   by other army unit finally agree to surrender but cut’s a deal, they surrender if all the soldier that whom who will they surrender and will met them will unload all the their magazine from their rifle unfortunately the commander of that army unit agree just for the rebel to surrender. I don’t know why on earth that commander do that and actually agree.

It is so very dangerous to unload for a soldier if a rebel who is near and armed ,anyway when finally the rebel approach to the soldier they opened fire at the soldiers, and quickly all of the soldier died many of  whom who died are the batch of my father in his training. The rebel burned the dead bodies of  the soldier and loot all of their belongings specially their rifle and ammunition. When the time the general knew about this they begun to launch  a massive operation  aim to capture or kill the one whom is responsible for such an act cowardness for killing unarmed soldiers, Many military unit including  the unit of my father participated the operation, at that time that island was full of soldier , looking for the killers, they declare that island as “no man’s land’ it means that all of the place patrolled by the soldier there if they caught any resident there specially man they will kill it, my father said that in that place where you can see that a life of a human is nothing there are killings everywhere, after months of searching they did not capture or kill who were responsible for the killing of the soldiers the suspects maybe they leave the island just after the incident. The fellow tribesman of the suspect paid the heavy price. Year after the unit of my father was move to Basilan another dangerous place again.f
