I don’t know about you but my first memory of life on earth for me happened when I was in the first grade. I remember standing by my desk crying and balling my eyes out because my older brother was leaving me there. Before you can understand let me fill you in on a couple of things. This was the first day of the school year. I was just shown where my desk was by my older brother. And my brother turns and walks off to go to his classroom that was in the portables behind my classroom. And that is when I lost it. No one told me that I would have to go through the day by myself, so it was a little stressful and traumatic. You know little kids are always crying about on thing or another. But I guess I made it through the day ok.
The name of the school was Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic School. The school was first grade through eighth grade, and had about 250 students. This school was jumping back in the day. The school was loaded with structure and school rules were enforced. You know back in the day if you did something out of line you could be paddled, and they did call in the coach once or twice for one or two minor infractions I may have committed. First of all, to start the day, we would have to line up outside in the parking lot. Yes, the first school rule of order and discipline were enforced long before entering the building. Just like in the military with rank and file, grade by grade. No talking or anything after the bell, just line up and get ready to move. I never saw an infraction occur outside in the parking lot waiting to enter the classroom, and I am sure if there was that person caught a beat down.
Now I don’t know about you but to me it seems like being able to only be able to remember back to when I was five years old does not seem to be very good. Not that this is some kind of contest or anything, but that is one memory that I can honestly say that I was there for and remember. Like I said, kids are usually so busy bouncing off all of their surroundings until its hard to see how they can remember anything. And that was me, just take me where I need to go and tell me what to do, when to do it, when to stop doing it, and what to do next. For the most part that’s me now happy go lucky.
