A series of articles on rationalism. This is the second installment. This article discusses the logic behind my Atheist philosophy.
I consider myself an Atheist. I do not believe in the existence of any supernatural power which cannot be described by the physical laws of nature. If there are incidents or occurrences that we cannot understand or explain through science, then it is not because there is no possible rational explanation but it is just because we do know the reason. Its not that it is beyond science, but it’s just that man’s knowledge of science is only limited. There will come a day when we shall be able to provide a rational explanation to such incidents based on scientific grounds.
I will give you an example from human history to make my point clear. In Greek mythology Zeus, the King of Gods was described as the creator of lightning and thunder. It was said that when he was angry he would rain thunders on Earth. Indra, the King of Gods in Hindu mythology also did the same thing.
Now why were such explanations of common physical phenomenon so very much rampant in ancient civilisations? Was it because there was truly a Zeus or an Indra who was responsible for thunder or lightning? I am afraid, no. Such explanations were conceived only because man in those days did not know the science behind lightning. Hence it was only convenient for him to say that these are the results of God’s wrath. Modern man knows the reason. He knows that potential difference between positive and negative electrostatic charges is the reason for lightning and thunder. Hence he does not say that its the wrath of God that is unfolding.
It’s the same thing for every other unexplainable we hear regularly through TV or newspaper or the Internet. We think that it is unexplainable because we do not know every thing, because our quest for science has just begun. One day we shall be able to explain things in a better way.
May be a blogger a thousand years from now will use our example in his blog just as I am using the Greeks and the ancient Hindus.
