October two is the day of the Feast of the Guardian Angels. On October 2, 1997, I was involved in a serious auto accident and could have been killed or permanently injured. I am convinced that my Guardian Angel saved my life that day and turned my life around permanently in all ways to the good.

I was in a bad relationship at the time.  Several hours later, I called my then girlfriend at the time to tell her about what had happened.   Of course, I wanted her to come and see right then and there.  She did come, but she had to ask.  Needless to say, I was not happy.  She fired me three weeks later.  Good riddance.

My mother was wonderful.  She stayed with me in the hospital that night.  She stayed with me the next day.  She took me to the LSAT test the day after.  She fed me the week after and got me to and from work when I was able to return.  I did not deserve her motherliness, but she was more than willing to oblige and I needed my mommy at the time.  It is funny my father did not even come to the hospital.  I guess he was busy.

How can I count the ways that I was lucky?  I could go on all day, but I name just a few.

  1. I only suffered a concussion which bothered me for a few days.  I was able to return to work on Tuesday, missing just two work days.   I suffered no long term damage of any kind.  I did pull a few glass pieces out of my ear months later, but I do not count that.
  2. I was able to take the LSAT two days later.  Even though I probably did not score as good as I could have done, I was able to get into my second choice for law school, graduated, passed the bar, and have practiced law for almost eight years now.
  3. The collision was probably the beginning of the end of the bad relationship that I had.  We broke up three weeks later.  Four months later, I began dating my now wife of eight years.
  4. Of course, it was a bad thing that I “totaled” my car.  However, I was able to buy a better car that lasted me a good ten years.  I was sued over the accident.  However, thank God, the young girl in the small truck only suffered minor damage.  Her injuries and scars healed.  The case was settled by my insurance company prudently and for a fair amount.
  5. Last, but not least, I turned closer to God.  I think this is why God allowed this harm to come to me, but only good about it to follow.  I found my Catholic faith.  I lived again according to the commandments.  I prayed more.  While I am not perfectly happy with my spiritual life, it is a lot better than it was on October 2, 1997.  And my guardian angel saved my body, health, mind and soul.

Below is the prayer we used to say in school each morning.  Say it if you are so inclined.

Angel of God,
My Guardian Dear,
to whom His love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and to guard,
to rule and guide.

Amen.  (http://www.catholic.org/prayers/prayer.php?p=839)
