A wonderful Christmas celebrating a very special gift.
Looking back through life I have been trying to decide which one of my past 64 Christmases was the most wonderful of all. I think that the Christmas of 1991would have to be my choice for the best of all of them. I have had many Christmases which were special, but let me tell you the reason why I think this particular one would have to take first place.
The story starts with my son and his wife who were married in June of 1990. She is a wonderful girl and we all love her a very much. She is special, and she and my son love each other dearly. On Mother’s Day in May of 1991, they gave me my first mother’s day card from them. It was a special treat to get my first card from them, and I was about to experience a wonderful surprise. When I opened the card, I read what she had written to me wishing me a happy mother’s day. Then I noticed a bit more writing over to the side of the card, and I read it. It was the big announcement. They were going to have a baby.
Since my son is our oldest child, this baby would be our first grandchild. I was so excited and did not think I could possibly wait until the following January, when the baby was due. Each day I was thinking about it and wondering just what it would be like to be a grandmother. The last baby that I had was a teenager at this time, so it had been awhile since I had had a little one to love and cuddle.
Somehow I made it through the days and months. I believe it was in June or July when her doctor did his first Ultrasound. The kids came by our house that day, beaming. They had the first pictures of their child. There were two pictures of the baby, and they showed them to us. I was studying the pictures, doing my best to try to see what the baby looked like. As I pored over the pictures, admiring my first grand baby, my son said: “Look at the pictures, mom. One has Baby A, and one has Baby B.” That didn’t mean anything to me, I just thought they had printed that on them because there were two different pictures of the baby. I looked at my son, he was grinning broadly, and he said: “There are two of them. We are having twins.” I could not believe what I’d just heard. I thought he was kidding. There had not been twins born into our family since my Mother had twin baby girls when I was two years old. Oh! how exciting it was. Now I sure could hardly wait until they got here.
