An article about my names. It reveals my real name and me.

The famous quote from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

“Name” is a word or words by which a person is known and spoken to or about. As a person who is attracted to marketing lesson, name is very important for me. A famous brand is very precious in bussiness world. From the Bible I also find that name is important in God’s sight. That’s why God changed Abram name to be Abraham, and then He changed Simon’s name to be Peter. Saul also changed his name to be Paul. And my pastor sugessted his congegration to give good names to themselves, their kids and environments.

My name is Eunike or Eunice in English. Eunike is a Greek name. The words Euníke comes from “eú”, good, and “níke-”, victory. Nike, in Greek mythology, was the goddess of victory who fought on the side of the Olympian gods. Together, they gained a victory over the mighty Titans. Later the Romans adopted Nike into their worship and gave her the Latin name Victoria.

I got that name from my late pastor when I was babtized by him. He gave me that name according to II Timothy 1:5. In the Bible, Eunice was St.Timothy’s mother. I like the meaning of the name: the happy victory or the victory that make happy. I think it is a good name.

Tan or Chan in Cantonese and Chen in Mandarin is Chinese family name. It is the Chinese surname of my ancestor in China. I use Eunice Tan as my user name in Triond and google this name in internet makes me realize that I have used a very common name in Asia. Tan or Chen is one of the most common Chinese family names, ranks at the 5th most popular surname in Mainland China and the most popular surname in Singapore, Taiwan, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian (spelt Tan), Hong Kong (spelt Chan) and Macau. Chinese people began to use Chen as their surname since 10th century BC. Chen Dynasty (557-589) was the fourth and the last of the Southern dynasties in China.

My birth name is Mariyani Sutrisno. One of my friends said my birth name is “very Indonesian”. A member of Indonesian legislative council, who was also a closed friend of my grandfather suggested this name to my father who decided to be Indonesian citizen and changed his name to an Indonesian name. Sutrisno is my father’s name and now become surname for my family. “Trisno” is a Javanese word means “love”. I don’t know the meaning of Mariyani. I guess it comes from French name Marianne. Mary means bitter, I honestly don’t like this fact.

However that is only a name. We should not only get good names and do nothing. We have to develop good characteristics within us and build reputable names for ourselves. It is a pleasant if we have a reputable name like Abrahan Lincoln’s, who was still remembered 200 years after his birth year, isn’t it?
