My take on Bellingham, Washington, examining just how great of a place it really is.

Just returning from a short visit to Bellingham, Washington, I realized just how unique that city really is. My first visit to Bellingham occurred when  in 2001 while my brother was attending Western. I was young and did not fully comprehend the culture of Bellingham, but now that I am older,  it means so much more.

Driving alone for the first time in Seattle and Bellingham, I was driving with a trial and error philosophy because if I got lost or went somewhere I did not mean to I would simply learn something new about the towns I would be spending the majority of my time in for the next two years. I would find myself on what I think is one of the most beautiful residential areas in Washington State, with huge houses and a view of the bay. I could help but think to myself about lucky I would be to live in one of those houses.

One of the days of my visit, I went to Fairhaven south of the WWU campus, and explorer all that district had to offer. Being the English geek that I am, I spent hours in Village Books and then a near buy coffee shop reading the book I had recently purchased. On the Western Campus everyone I came in contact with was smiling and quite pleasant. I Even made a new friend my first day in Bellingham because people are so friendly.

Students of all variety are drawn to Western Washington University and Bellingham because of its openness to diversity and accepting culture. People genuinely want to get to know you, not just get you to be their friend on Facebook.  The intellect and personality of those who attend Western is completely different from where I spent my first two years of college. I do not think I could have made a better choice than transferring to Western.

Not only is Bellingham the home of a renowned university, it also has very good K through 12 programs. Good school districts and the opportunity for students to be challenged and given the opportunity to grow.  Even though it is known most for the university, Bellingham and outlying areas are wonderful places to start a family because of it’s school districts and expanded culture.
