Here is my first experience dealing with my dog’s anal glands and what happened.
My four year old pug Layla has just recently started having issues with her anal glands. We had not had this problem before. The first time we smelled it we thought that she had gotten into something outside. I gave her a bath and the smell was gone, but not for long. The very next day the smell was back. Not sure what the problem was or what to do I searched on the internet. I found a few sites that helped pugnation.com and pugman.com. I found out that the smell was coming from her anal glands and that they needed to be expressed. I looked at some videos and tried to see if this was something that I could do on my own. I got Layla in the bath tub and put on some rubber gloves and gave it a shot. I was able to get out some liquid, but it wasn’t enough. I gave her another bath and the smell temporarily went away. We ended up taking her to the vet. She informed us that her glands were full and that we should keep an eye or should I say our noses open in case she needs it done again. The vet stated that Layla may be ok for a month or maybe even a year just depends on how fast they fill up. We brought Layla home and everything was fine over the next few days. I was lying with Layla in bed when I smelled it again. I couldn’t believe it. I told my husband about it and he asked me if I thought I may be able to try and do it myself. I got my rubber gloves again and set up her up in the tub. One of the videos stated that one of the most effective ways to express anal glands was to go in, yes go in her anus and squeeze from within. So I got some lubrication and gave it my best shot. Needless to say I wasn’t able to do it this time either. We ended up having to her to the vet again. The vet stated that she may end up having to have surgery to have the anal glands removed. I was hoping this was not going to be the case. She was able to empty them, and she did advise us that some fiber in Layla’s diet would help.
