A Florida boy falls in love with his next door neighbor.

I’m in love. Odd, how the one exception that contradicts my almost perfectly normal life, happens to almost every person I know. Although love is not normal, it happens often, some people even imagine it’s there when it’s not. Those relationships end rather bad don’t they? I would pray to any deity that mine won’t end like that. That is if I believe.

Lucy Wolfaardt is my neighbour and I was happy when I found out. She is my age, sixteen, and lives in a huge three-storey house. It’s very different to my small two-storey home. She used to live in South Africa before coming to live here, in Florida. When I first heard her foreign accent, mixed with her sweet, chiming voice, I immediately began asking questions. She comes from a small city called Cape Town and I am so glad she left. Otherwise, how would she possibly be in my life? When would I see her long blonde hair and slightly crooked smile, more beautiful than the crack of dawn? No, I am glad she left. But I am also in such pain. At first the thought of her as my neighbour filled me with joy. Soon I learnt what despair it would cause me. I am constantly reminded how invisible I am to her. I am like a speck of dust right in front of her in relation to how much attention she pays to me. Well, not today. Today is Thanksgiving and mum baked cookies for the neighbours. I readily offered to deliver it to them. It means I might see Lucy.

I look at myself in the mirror. Cool shirt, cool jeans and cool shoes. Wait, do untied shoe laces make me look cool? I don’t know. So I leave the one shoe tied and the other untied. There. I leave my room and practically come bounding down the stairs, past our ticking clock. I grab the wrapped bowl of cookies and shout; “I’m going!” to my parents and rush through the door.

White. It met me on the other side. It’s been snowing for a while now. I trudged through the cold, cold white snow. Not nearly as cool as Lucy’s black clothes she wore last time I saw her. A car pulled over across the road from Lucy’s house and a man got out. I paid him no heed. It meant there would be less attention to give to Lucy.

The door to Lucy’s house opened. No! If it’s Lucy, all the preparation of greeting her I at the door is down the drain!

Lucy ran through the door. She seemed so excited. Ecstatic. I was entranced by her beauty.

She shouted; “Grant!” and fell into the man’s arms. What? The man was a boy. Maybe nineteen. A brother?

Then they kissed deeply. Lovingly. The type of kiss I’ve always wanted to give her.

I tripped over my untied laces.

The story of a man and his extended family – the challenges they faced, their internal conflicts, their growth, their passions, their faith, losses, and victories. Life can sometimes be cruel to some people. Not everyone who goes through harsh challenges comes out unscathed; however, there are some – the lucky few – who persevere and triumph despite the odds. Collected through a series of numerous interviews with several family members, the Writer put together this story – his personal history - to chronicle his family’s journey spanning several years – a journey everyone can surely relate to and be inspired by.

Lee trade at a local general store where he often purchased foodstuff he couldn’t grow in the garden. He was a Yes Man however, the white men continued to call him “uncle.” He always carried himself in a humble manner his head held low, with his face toward the ground ready to submit to authority in any form. Even his children had to act in obedience “give in” and agree for their own good. Although, he submitted it did not guarantee better treatment or respect from his antagonist. They were yelled and screamed at so much it seem to leave them feeling angry, depressed, and bewildered. Lee was observed saying, our women were scared and not able to trust us to protect them from harm. These words are to bear witness to the fact that more than a century later, intimidation is still felt in the Deep South. If you have a mind to, take a stroll through the Colored community during those years and sense the vibrations they felt. He echoed the sentiment of disappointment and humiliation who justified the rulers treats people of lower estate like this and who gave you the authority? I’m free so why are you burning and setting fire to my church? The Human rights Act stated that to beat me, lynch me, shoot me, and unlawfully detain me in opposition to the law written to protect all people even Colored people. Then, for God sakes, why are you hurting me? I did not do anything to you! Lee said these words to me once. If there’s a God above please show us your love and “Come see about me” he didn’t come—he sent us a representative from among us and gifted him with the fruits of the spirit, to ease the pain and to offer hope and forgiveness in a non-violent way. I beg you to differ one cannot see clearly through the tears of sorrow in your eyes or respond in a sound frame of mind. One that’s filled with hate and revenge for a time as this! He was sent to show us patience he had the ability to calm things down in our community and help Colored folks to reexamine the U. S. Constitution that govern every citizen—we have “ inalienable rights” guaranteed to us. Looking back on those events—I believe he done the right things or made decisions which were in our best interests. Here are some of his credentials—born in the south with southern parents that reared him there and he was educated there. Basically, he was one of our own in experience to understand us, loved by a home grown boy who did well—but not by all somewhere we learned as a people of color not unity but divisions. The problems of betrayal within the black community were a genuine one. A reality many black leaders couldn’t afford to ignore. A Saturday in late summer was chosen because the planting season is for the most part, is over black farmers had more time to get their produce to market. No matter how careful the sharecroppers meetings were they not able to keep them a secret from land owners. Instead, James one of the betrayers revealed contents of several meetings to his property owner. Mr. Jasper considered James to be a hard worker; nevertheless, he would mete out just punishment for participation in the plot. Jasper use to overrule land owners who felt sorry for Blacks who lost placement on a Farm. In the interim, he met with other land owners in which he gave them strict orders. He uttered, “boys don’t yak hire none of my workers or will be sorry yak did.” Yak here? Other land owners never did. Black share croppers were compel to work for no other White family no matter what happen. Hence, the son of the south was misunderstood, referred as a traitor to his race and called “Uncle Tom” the idea of non-violence was not well received by frustrated and angry young black men from the North who were clueless concerning culture and the ways of our southern roots. Many of them made fun of southern lifestyle to try to be as mean as possible. “We got to keep the peace.”

To be or not to be...you have no choice but to be a Patel.

Patelism is the most dominant political philosophy in CSUeastbay. As it stands, there are already 3 devoted members who would sacrifice anythhing to protect, defend and promote thos ideology. Having said that, it is not eaasy and simple to be a Patel. You have to adopt a wide range of behaviours, attitudes and more importantly develop specific qualities to qualify for membership in this revolution. The following a summary of what you have to do to qualify for being a Patel.

1. You have to be extremey cheap. For Example if there are two same things available in the market, one is of $1.99 and the other one is of $2.00. Then you have to buy the item priced $1.99 no matter it is of low quality. Because that is the first requirement for being a Patel.

2. You have to fuck a swedish girls. From last two or three weeks, we have noticed that swedish girls are very much into Patels. So it has become one of the most important requirements of being a Patel and Moreover you have to fuck this girl in the college dorms.

3. Be stubborn. If someone is giving you 1000$ but you want 2000$ from him then you will not even take those $1000 that a person is giving to you because you have to keep in view your reputation. This is the third rule for being a Patel.

4.Copying is essential for your survival in this political community. Whatever you say, whatever you do and whatever you wear, you have to copy everything from the leader of the community. Otherwise you will be kicked out of the community.

5. “Nobody fucks Patel, Patel fucks nobody” is the slogan of Patel community. You have to respect and follow it wholeheartely.

6. The sixth rule of the community is that, you have to fuck a chinese girl only when you are drunk. And you have to last each time for at least 45 minutes.

7. The normal wardrobe that you have in your house should only be 0.02% of the total clothes that you have. In simple languge, you have to have so many clothes that you can wear different clothes everyday.

8. Even if you have so many clothes, then also you have to borrow clothes or shoes from your friends and never return them because THIS IS PATELISM.

9. Your Bank balance should always be negative. So, if you want something make your friends buy it to you. hold on…you are not borrowing the money, so you are not supposed to pay it back

10. Patel works for noboday, everybody works for Patel. So, you dont have to get a job, you can just live out of other peoples money.

Finally, all the members of the community follow this believe “bros before whoes.” It means you have to share everything including the girl that you are dating.

WE SHALL CONTINUE DISCRIPTION OF PATELISM IN THE NEXT ARTICLE…

After the catastrophic crash, the indecisive captain waiting a full hour before giving the abandon ship order, even though, after the dreadful moment at 9:42 p.m. senior crew members were aware of how devastating the damage was.

In yet another damning twist of the screw, dramatic video footage – possibly shot by Moldovan dancer Domnica Cemortan, who was with the cowardly Captain Schettino just prior to the collision – of the Costa Concordia command deck showing how relaxed his attitude was in the crucial hour after his vessel had hit the rocks..

Mediaset network TG5 news show broadcast the video, which shows what really happened on that bridge shortly after the catastrophic crash, the indecisive captain waiting a full hour before giving the abandon ship order, even though, after the dreadful moment at 9:42 p.m. power had failed, senior crew members were aware of how devastating the damage was.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WPL7UggeIR4]

Despite being told that the sea was pouring in, Schettino maintained that should be no problem, that they should wait to reach shallow waters before taking action, and blithely ignoring the fact that the Concordia was tilting at a 12-degree angle, the deck over-crowded but no lead being taken .people, no decision is made.

Chaos was ensuing on the bridge of the stricken vessel, as the tilt increased to a 20-degree angle and panic was spreading, yet the captain seemed unable to give the order to evacuate until a full 50 minutes had elapsed since the collision, though this command was never relayed to the frightened passengers.

It was well over a half-hour AFTER that when the first lifeboats got lowered, but marine salvage experts are convinced that, had the evacuation happened immediately after the collision , and not an hour and a quarter later – probably no lives would have been lost.

Francesco Verusio, the magistrate leading the disaster investigation, which saw 17 people die and a further 15 go missing, now has this piece of damning evidence, which of vital investigative importance, as such footage was never mentioned by those featured in it when questioned.

The biggest question still remains the utter incompetence of the ship staff in regard to emergency procedures and the dreadful lack of passenger safety lessons. Had these things been properly addressed the tragedy might have been far less traumatic, and the only ones to blame have to be the cruise company. This must NEVER be allowed to happen again.

This piece started as a letter to a very dear friend in whom I had mistakenly taken romantic interest.

“Chilled Dichotomies of Reality and Mankind’s Social Constructs”

Cold? You find me cold? Well, we all must thank something invented and deified to supposed-potency), like the burning star round which our lives revolve, that you don’t feel the reciprocal sense of my emotive response to your being these days. People have so often worshipped the sun, you know, so as to make it the shining object of mythologies glorifying its properties and canonizing its impact on the forms of life known to human history’s brief, scarcely more than a blinking of newborn eyes. The sun’s mere rays have been woven into the fabric out of which creation figments are sewn, their ill-fitting burlaps soon evolving to shackles and lies that serve to further the attacks of patriarchy and racism upon the fever-dream of civilized equality.

Powerful though the god-like solar body may be in the ill-fated annals of a social deception such as that of our species’ recorded history and its growth toward contemporaneity, the absence of the sun (and its often-deadly brilliance) is surely the more powerful of the two sides of the light vs. dark dichotomy. The power of light—that which warms otherwise-frozen, lifeless rocks and fuels the verdant obscenity of chlorophyll surging forward to meet visible wavelengths—seldom concentrates itself so far or so fully and suddenly as to effectively end life in any capacity comparable to the many other ways life may end. Life is our species’ default; frigid darkness is the intruding change (thereby deemed volatile in our omnipotent theorizing of potentialities) and the only likely source of apocalyptically sudden change in our world.

If you indeed find me cold, imagine how I must find you, in my lifetime’s memory-recorded history, the sole source of a particular brand of pain I can only assume to be even more potently lethal than freezing to death by starvation in the absence of light. Your very existence in a shared world promises icy death and fearsome change too sudden to bear (but little else) to me.

Interestingly enough, he found a reason to visit them frequently. Outwardly, it appeared that some church members thought they ought to be together. But Jasmine never quite thought of it that way, despite the numerous amounts of time they spent together. She worked in New Jersey, and Slick would sometimes drive her there. During this drive one particular day, she made it very clear that her intentions were only to have a friendly relationship with him. Slick just couldn’t figure her out. After all the time they’d spent together… and how they seemed so close, how could she not feel the same way he did? He simply felt she was being inconsiderate, not sharing her true feelings with him. He thought that maybe he should try to bring those feelings forward in her by persuading her with his actions. He leaned in closer to her, only to have her respond by dousing him with scouring powder right in his face! “The answer is no! Don’t you come any closer or worse things could happen to you!” She screamed at him. It would seem as though he were behaving much like a fool with his head in the stocks, nothing more than a glutton for punishment. The brother must have thought he was just hard to resist and need not to have prayed. He just kept on saying over and over to her “The Lord said you are going to be my wife.” She came over to his apartment on the corner of Grant and Valley Street after that. At this time Slick made her dinner and they talked about the events that had taken place before. Soon after dinner they found themselves caught up in a game of ‘dare’. In the process of this, Slick ended up playfully wrestling Jasmine into the bedroom and onto the bed. He began kissing her here and there… and to his surprise, she offered no resistance. Deciding to take it a step further, slick reached down and touched her as she smiled in satisfaction. They did, however, agree to cease such amorous games from there, because it only caused them to feel guilty and uncomfortable in the end. The church leaders would always teach the young adults never to have sex until being properly married. His aim was then on to channel those urges and drives into pursuing a married relationship. Honestly, he was determined to treat her respectfully and not dishonor her body just to fulfill such carnal desires. He hoped to learn self-control, and wait for a sanctified love in holy matrimony, between a man, and a woman. He felt it was then necessary to make arrangements of celibacy and decided that he needed to plan their wedding. Jasmine, however, still had fervent objections with establishing such a serious relationship with him. He tried desperately to step into her shoes, attempting to see things from her viewpoint, but he just couldn’t seem to find a reasonable explanation as to why this couldn’t happen. Confused, he pressed her for a decision to go forward with the plans. Inadvertently, she consented to be his wife. On a certain day he received her call. It seemed as though she would just abandon anything that had to do with him. He would say such simple things as “Will you marry me?” and she’d respond with something like “I don’t want to get married right now; I want to continue with my career and travel.” Well they did end up getting married! And the two of them had a single child, a son. Jasmine carried her unborn child throughout the summer and was miserable and regretful. “Why did this happen to me?!” She would complain, being full of remorse. They found the opportunity to go on a family picnic in the summer in the month of July. Slick was having a job sponsor event so he was able to use it as an outlet to bring the soon to be family closer together. However, Jasmine felt too ill and uncomfortable to stay, so they had to leave early. A week or so later, Slicks “number one son” was born in Easton Hospital, the middle of august. There were complications during child birth, and the obstetrician ordered an emergency C-section. Because of this, Slick had the honor of seeing his son first. Jasmine, being groggy didn’t have the opportunity to see her only son. During this time, Slick and Lessie Bell his mother watched his new son, and were amazed by the sight. A few minutes later, they delivered the child to Slick because of the mother’s unstable condition, and he experienced one of the most remarkable moments of his entire life.

Favorite Memory.

My favorite memory takes place under October skies, when the winter is beckoning at the celestial doorstep of the universe and the fall stubbornly holds the leaves in place on the branches of eternity. There in the unstructured in-between of past events and present thought memories take an ambiguous form of existence, like an old time movie that is fading away in both quality and relevance.

I’m not going to lie; I don’t really have a favorite memory. I don’t even have a favorite movie, or a favorite color. I’m just not a “favorites” type of guy, but I do know one thing. I have favorite people, and it is with them I hold my favorite memories.

Most of my favorite memories are those of doing the activities I enjoy the most for the first time. The first time I skied, the first time I wrote meaningful words, the first time I ran (not literally the very first time I ran but the first time I ran with strength and a purpose), the first time I laughed because I truly and fully understood the joke, the first time I had a great conversation with a good friend. These are the memories that are the best memories. The most important part about a good memory is the people they are made with.
