These are my views on the play “East is East” after reading the book and watching the film I decided to write about what I found in the concept Khan-Din created.

The audience seeks a profound image of George ruining what he planned to be a perfect appointment. They anticipate a cue for something to go wrong. This is because George is trying to become something that he isn’t. He pretends to be a father of a respected and traditional family.

Like many playwrights, Khan-din wrote his play to express a polemic. As an actor himself, Khan-Din was aware that the white, middle-class people dominated over British theatre. This surprised the young actor, because he was aware that there were many foreigners in Britain who had the talent and knowledge to fill in the gaps. Khan-Din realized that the lack of non-white people involved in the media, meant that the white community of Britain lacked in knowledge of the ‘foreign’ people.

This resulted Khan-Din writing about a mixed Pakistani family. He wanted the audience to realise that the foreign societies of Britain were no different to the native community. He aimed to break the barriers that separated people by their ethics; his message was simple – all humans are the same, they laugh, they cry and they love. His play shattered the division that the people had created. ‘East is east’ produced a new voice, a voice for those who didn’t fit easily into categories.

The play was set in 1970, a crucial time for foreigner’s progression in Great Britain. On 20 April 1968 Enoch Powell, a Communist MP made a controversial speech remembered as the ‘Rivers of Blood speech.’ Enoch Powell was a hostile critic to mass immigration from the Commonwealth countries. This meant that he despised migrants from countries such as Pakistan. Surprisingly Enoch Powell had many supporters; they were glad that he was able to open his racial views to the nation without any fear. The speech ended Powell’s political career, but it left the message embedded in the mind of those who felt about it most.

‘East is east’ challenged this prejudice of this. Powell felt that that in just two decades, the black man would have the whip over the white man. ‘East is east’ said that the white and black man would both share the whip, or more that there was no such thing as the black man or white man, mankind would have the whip. It refers to the society as an influx, a combination of people of all races, a beauty alone. The play is an anti-racist protest that confronts the political and moral issues and expresses an opinion on the matter that hasn’t been heard before. George is a symbol of this, the plays shows that eliminating these people from Britain would be like eradicating a family member. It is greater to unite than to divide.

The novel was based on the first line of Rudyard Kipling’s poem, OH, East is east, and West is west, and never the twain shall meet. The aim of this play is to controvert that this quote is incorrect, both sides of the planet are made for each other and nothing can part them.

However this opinion is more recent, it means that the new generation is destined to be different. It challenges the modern audience, it provokes them to open their eyes and observe what the future generation has to offer. The play is basically proclaiming that the new society is changing, so we all have to change. The old ways are not necessarily the right ways for the future.
