Lola: Three-legged Wonderdog

There’s a bone over here, I know it. I want that bone, I need that bone. I can smell it, but can’t see it. But I know it’s here! I know it, my mouth is watering.

We like bones, especially–us terriers. And I happen to be the prettiest Jack Russell terrier alive! There is no doubt, I can feel it!

I am Lola: Three-legged princess; I have three legs and an awesome nose. Weighing only about fifteen pounds, we

Jack Russells are fearless, so I can guarantee you: I am no slacker.

I stepped on a Black Widow spider once, my leg got infected, so they had to take it off at the shoulder. It’s okay though, I can still do everything-even run faster than Booboo.

Booboo is my buddy, my sidekick. He is older than me, but he still knows I am the boss. We protect our home from snakes and squirrels, rats and rodents. And from the bad guys.

Here comes Booboo, now. When I tell him about the bone, he’s going to be so happy. I think I’ll surprise him, let him think we both smelled it.

“Booboo, come over here and tell me if you can smell anything,” barked Lola. Here he comes.

“Yes, Boss?” yelped Boboo.

“Tell me if you smell anything over here. I want to be sure,” I nodded at him.

He starts sniffing the ground around us, gets a funny look on his face, and excitedly tells me, “I smell an old bone.”

He starts jumping in excitement, so I just tell him, “Calm down, and let’s get to work.”

“Okay,” he grins.”

Our family dug some holes for planting trees yesterday, and this scent began to fill the back yard. Humans can not smell it, but we can. Human noses are not as good as a dog’s nose, nobody‘s nose is like my nose.

We have been digging for ten minutes, when Killer trots over to see what we are doing. Killer is the local bully; a black Pit Bull, always looking for trouble.

Booboo tells him, “We smelled an old bone, so we are digging it up.”

“You two are so little, do you guys want help?”

He is offering to help us, imagine that. “We’ve got it,” I tell him.

So, seeing no trouble here, he turns and walks away. We do not need help with the bone. We do not want it, we do not need it; we do not want bigger dogs taking over. We are going to do the work ourselves, and enjoy the reward ourselves.

Digging hard, Booboo barks excitedly when he hits bone. His tail is wagging as hard now as he was digging before.

“Ooohh boy, Boss! Yippee, oh boy!” Booboo is happier than I have ever seen him. His tail can not wag any faster.

That makes me very happy! I give him a kiss and a nudge

of encouragement. We have dug up a big, Brontosaurus bone-

and while it takes us both to lift it, we are thrilled!

Happy, happy, happy! It is so big.

There are suddenly a hundred baby rattlesnakes crawling around our feet. We have dug up a rattlesnake bed too, and Mama is not going to be happy.

Rattlesnakes! They are the meanest of them all.

A minute has not passed, when a big rattler comes slithering up, hissing angrily. She sees us, and coils up to strike. There is nothing we can do.

Booboo backs away a little and I do the same, as the mama snake’s eyes look like fire. Her tail is rattling fast, she is mad, but this just makes us madder.

In one move, Booboo stomps on her body to keep her still, while I grab her by the neck. Then, I shake wildly while she is caught in my teeth. I shake as fast and as hard as I can, growling and grunting the whole time. Shake, shake, shake. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

This breaks her spine, and kills her. The rattling stops. It is quiet once again.

Everything worked out well for us. We did not get hurt, and we found a big, juicy bone. I can not say the same for Mama Rattlesnake.

Maybe our friend Evan Eagle will enjoy baby rattlesnake

for supper. I will surely let him know.
