Love after death.

Sometimes love can transcend death and cause suffering and unrest. Meet Kubikiri Basara, a video game character from the Samurai Shodown series.

He was a man who lived peacefully with his beloved wife, Kagaribi, until a demonic swordsman named Zankuro came to his village and slaughtered everyone. He was “reborn” as a yurei, a type of ghost or spirit in Japanese folklore and is separated from Kagaribi. He harbors extreme hatred for Zankuro for his wife’s death, thus he is unable to crossover peacefully into the afterlife. He seeks out to avenge his and Kagaribi’s deaths, roaming aimlessly, crying out her name, longing to be with her. A wretched soul living in a relentless nightmare that never ceases to end.

Kagaribi, his beloved wife, only separated upon death.

During battles, he often cries out her name, forever mourning her loss. He yearns for her, always suffering and in constant agony. She only appears as a ghostly apparition, haunting her husband. His soul cannot rest until he avenges her demise.

Basara and the ethereal spirit of Kabaribi together, for a moment in time.

She is the one thing he loves most in his life. She constantly haunts him, and he only exists to avenge her death. His only wish is to die so he can be with her forever in the afterlife. That is all that matters to him. He just wants to be with his precious Kabaribi, for all eternity.

Basara’s ending in Samurai Shodown IV.

Kagaribi appears briefly before him, asking anyone to help her poor, tormented husband, then disappears right before her lover’s eyes, much to his anguish. He seems doomed to roam the earthly world, hungry for vengeance, yearning to be with his wife, wanting to die. All he wants is to be with his beloved. She was and still is the most important thing in his life. He was content to live a simple life with her, and only her. Such a sad and tragic soul.

Great story. Without love we are a bunch of lost souls.
