From the author of Wrath and the Athyxian Chronicles, comes an excerpt of a new project called "Vile Darkness." By Author Kevin C. Davison. All rights reserved copyright 2011.

To make matters worse my memories of Lynne were getting more frequent and stronger.  Every time my mind recalled a former memory it was becoming more vivid rather than vague as they use to be.  I was slowly gaining back my humanity if you could call it that given my current condition and there was nothing I could do about it.

Two more weeks went by and our numbers had increased to forty.  Given the number of people that we caused to go missing in the Mount Hood National Forest it was time to move on.  There were just too many Search and Rescue units combing the forest for the missing people that we had fed on and converted.

Even though I never said anything, hiding from large search parties seemed strange when we knew with our sizable numbers we could have simply drained them all and added to our small army.  When the search parties had passed a safe distance away I looked to my master.

“Why do we hide?  Why don’t we feed and add them as we did the single victims in the wilderness?”  I asked.

“Because you fool, killing one at a time allows a quick kill and an easily explained missing persons report while an entire search party would surely attract attention from the National Guard.  I mean to leave this place now anyhow.  We should be strong enough to face our enemy now.”  The master replied, long-winded as it was.

“Our enemy?  I was created in a facility.  I don’t know anything about your former enemies though I know that any enemies of yours are mine by simple chain of command.  Who or what is this enemy?”  I seemed to have annoyed my master with my wordy rambling of questions.

“My children,” the master called for all to hear.  We instinctively hissed in response.  “It is time to leave.  We must keep to the shadows and make our way to the city.  In the city of Portland we have an enemy who has managed to go unnoticed for centuries.  It was he that led the scientists to me and helped them capture me indirectly.  This enemy is a vampire and he will not be easily destroyed.  We will have to work together as a pack if we are to win the day.  When we find him we have to destroy his sacred garden and coffin.  Even without his coffin he can still regenerate within the soil of his garden because it is soil from his homeland of ancient Babylon.  I dare not tell you much more other than I can guarantee most of you will die, but it will be for your master and not in vain.  We will destroy the coffin and garden, and then we will destroy the Babylonian.”  The master finished and we all hissed in unison.
