A very short scenario of childbirth in a medieval setting, but with the possibilities that exist in Dungeons and Dragons.
What would life be like if we lived in a world where all of the D&D rules, and histories, and races were real? People would automatically pick out a character and say “I want to be this, or that”. But really think about what it would be like. Go all the way back through evolution. Think back to all the little unicellular organisms that swam around in the “ocean of life” for so long, and then started dividing, and becoming many celled organisms, and then critters… Orcs? Elves? Goblins? Halflings? Dwarves? Pixies? (Yes there are pixies in D&D.)
All of the afore mentioned are humanoids… and we would have all had to have had a common ancestor, when exactly we branched off and became “other species”, I cannot even begin to make an educated guess. But what would life be like if we lived in a world where all of the D&D rules, and histories, and races were real?
I don’t want to go all the way back to unicellular lifeforms, even though I kind of already have… Let’s start where most D&D games start, in medieval times.
You know that one room cabin, or small cottage you live in? The one where you grow your crops (and it is okay to have the local witch come and cast a spell on the land to ensure a good harvest. You just have to pay him/her to do it.), and tithe to the “upper class” baron, or lord, or count, and are allowed to live there in return? Yeah, that cottage… Your wife is about to have a baby. The really good news is, that magic is real and allowed here! On Earth in medieval times, you could have had a midwife come in, who knows her business, but doesn’t know about washing her hands after each delivery… Kind of makes you cringe a bit, doesn’t it?
Here comes the midwife that is going to deliver your baby in the world you live in now. Awesome timing too, because the baby is about to be born. Of course you are not sure about the baby, you love your wife, but she was raped by that orc during the last raid, and you are not sure if the baby is yours, by blood, or not. Of course it will be yours in name, she is your wife after all and you love her right?
