A very short scenario of childbirth in a medieval setting, but with the possibilities that exist in Dungeons and Dragons.

The midwife is a cleric from the local temple, and she helps your wife along and she is not in as much pain as she would have been, because the visiting mid-wife is also an apothecary, and has dosed your wife liberally with something to take away the worst of the pain.

The labor proceeds smoothly and out comes a baby half-orc boy. It is as well you had already decided to accept the baby as yours, but what else could you have done anyway? Stuff happens, like orc raids in the middle of the night no one was ready for because no one thought to cast the alarm spell around the village the night before.

Oh no! Something has gone wrong and your lady will not stop bleeding! You are in a panic and you don’t know what to do. You are going to lose your wife to childbirth, and be left with a half-orc son to raise all by yourself… You cannot imagine life without your wife, your best friend… Wait! The cleric is doing something. She is casting a spell to heal whatever damage your wife must have taken, from birthing the huge body of the baby half-orc. You are so relieved you start crying. Your wife is fine, you have a son you accept, and everything is going to be okay. You pay the cleric what you can in silver and copper coins you have saved up just for this occasion, and you pledge time to the temple, to do work that needs done in the fields owned by the church, in return for what money you do not have on you, but still owe.

Other women around the village should start birthing their half-orc progeny soon as well. It isn’t anything to be ashamed of really. The blacksmith and the armorer are both half-orcs as well. Maybe you should approach one of them about a future apprenticeship for your son with one of them.

Life in a world like that of Dungeons and Dragons, it sounds really cool. What are some other situations you can think of, in this new world of ours, that would be interesting to ponder on a cold snowy night?
