What’s better than a bridal shower? The bride is beautiful and looking forward to being happily married. the old saying “Everybody loves a bride.” is true.

My sister gave a bridal shower for her soon to be daughter in law Chelsea this afternoon. The shower was held at my niece Cindy’s house. Darlene wanted to keep the shower as a surprise for Chelsea and I was surprised that Patrick pulled it off. I was sure he would cave and Chelsea would pry it out of him.You girls know how easy it is to get the low down from boyfriends.

The picture above is Barnsley Gardens and not Cindy’s house but imagine a white house with porches on two levels and large trees, orchards, bee hives and wooded hills and you will have it. She and her husband bought 11 acres out in the country thirty years ago with an old house on the property at least a hundred years old. It had an old well in the kitchen that had been covered over. I mention that to show you how old the house was , when they moved there it had running water and conviences. Their only daughter was born and raised there. They always planned to build a new house one day and a few years ago they did. It’s a beautiful house build in the old country style. It has hardwood floors, porches, balconies and a screened porch all the way across the back. They have an exercise room and an in law suite in the basement. Charlotte said she would move down there when she tired of keeping house. She said that with a wink though.

Any way to get back to the shower, we were the first guests to arrive besides Darlene, and Charlotte who was helping Darlene with the shower. We pulled around to the back to give others plenty of room to park on the circular drive.(should have know better) Lionel came with me because we thought some of the guys would be there. They always are. But the ladies kept arriving and no guys in sight. Lionel set in the living room chatting awhile then he began to get a little uncomfortable with ladies all around him and went to sit by himself on the back porch.

Chelsea’s mom and two sisters in law were very pleasant people. We enjoyed getting to know them. I helped get the spread of food on the table that Darlene had prepared and brought from her home in Summerville. Patrick came in with Chelsea and went to talk with Lionel. Nephew Wendell soon followed, Sister Betty Sue, and brothers in law, Pete and Jim came in after him, so Lionel had plenty of company on the back porch. Of course after we ladies served ourselves the men came in and took over the table. Isn’t that the usual way?

Patrick had managed to keep the shower a surprise for Chelsea and she was bowled over when she walked in and saw her mom, sisters in law , and all of us waiting for her.  Chelsea received many nice gifts. She has just finished her college year and will be moving into Patrick’s house. They will be married July in Adairsville. She is a sweet girl and we welcome her into the family.

We had a very enjoyable afternoon but when it was time to go our car was blocked in and we had to wait a bit for a couple of cars to move out. Traffic was moving well when we came out to the interstate and it was a pleasant drive home.

It was nothing short of a miracle just to get the guys to come to such a traditionally feminine gathering (except those given at a business–then the staff is sort of captive). I think the male/female division of guests is sort of an Ozarkian phenomena; maybe one of those traditions brought from Elizabethan England? The glimpses we see from the window of the house are beautiful, and the bride-to-be glows with happiness. I wish the young couple all the best.

Congratulations and best of luck to Chelsea and Patrick. My mother held the bridal shower for my fiance many years ago. The best thing was that my fiance ended up meeting relatives of hers that she never knew before. Her family spread the word.
What a great and exciting time bridal showers are for the soon-to-be bride.
PS – Now if you can only get pictures of the batchler party!

Thanks for the family chronicle. Everyone should do likewise. I did not and it’s getting harder to pull up old recollections from a dismal memory.

Thank you everyone, Your interest is appreciated. We did have a lovely day. The kids are so precious. They are both wonderful young people and I accept your best wishes for them.Daisy years ago the men went with the ladies and gathered at the workshop or garage to tell tall tales and drink moon shine while the ladies were at the shower. Now days they don\’t drink moon shine, they gather on the back porch or workshop and tell tall tales and eventually join the ladies. Sometimes they still sneak a little moon shine.
