Breaking up, after a lifetime together, is hard on everyone, especially the one who is being left behind. Dedicated to non-readers, and those who prefer to stay indoors.

We had known each other for a long time.  He was my baby-sitter, my best friend, someone to turn to when I was lonely.  That’s why I had to break it off.  He just sat there, his one eye closed, and yet, I felt as though he were watching me all the while.  As I reached for my glasses, I saw it.  On the small table, by my bed, there it was, a list of things we could do together, (well I could do them, he would watch).  Oh, there’s my favorite movie, we could watch it together.  Oh no!  That’s how you got to me, once before.  I’m going.  My new friend is waiting for me and it’s time we got to know each other.

You and I will see each other from time to time, but we’ll never be as close as we were.  He just sat there, still not saying a word, pretending to be asleep.  Sure, I thought, you can stay here, maybe a few of us will get together with you, once in a while.  This is the way it must be.  I wasn’t sure, but I almost thought I heard him cry out, “No, No, don’t do it, don’t do it!” as I walked purposely walked past him, to the wall, and pulled the plug.  ”That’s that,” I said aloud to no one in particular, “for at least the next hour, I am going outdoors to be with my new friend.  Perhaps you’ve heard of him, he’s called the sun!  Don’t worry, old friend,” I said, patting the old floor model television set, “I’m not throwing you out, it’s just time to make some new friends, and see daylight.”

I left my friend… my pal… my television set on it’s own, to recover from a broken heart.  Meanwhile, my new friend ( the sun) and I took a walk to see what life really looked like.
