I wrote this essay after reading a large collection of Paz’s works. As I had been reading them I kept seeing these (maybe not) references to RPG’s I just had to point out that maybe he played.
Octavio Paz played RPG’s also knows as role-playing games. Wait! Before you get out the torches and pitchforks remember this is only a personal observation that shouldn’t be taken to seriously. The reason that Paz played RPG’s is being said is because of a couple of lines that have been observed and through the lens of a geek are seen as references (however obscure) to a couple RPG’s that have been played for over twenty years. The first quote is strong in the evidence that it is a possible reference to a particular RPG, the second quote, not so strong.
First quote: “Gods without words/ play terrifying games.”(To talk; 65) The reason that this is seen as such an obvious reference to role-playing games is in a particular game called Exalted the gods are off playing a game. In Exalted simple every day humans suddenly become powerful, they have been infused with a piece of a god’s power. The thing is the gods have been off playing this very addicting game for a very long time, millenniums even so they don’t really care what is going on down on the Earth any more. They check in every so often to do something special then go back to this game that they are playing. It is terrifying because of how absolutely addicting it is. If a person sees even the tiniest part of this game they become so addicted that they spend the rest of their now pathetic life looking for the shards that have a piece of the game imprinted on it just to see more of the game. One may wonder if this is W.O.W.
The second: “the spider spins its plots.” (Insomniac; 19) This is evidence that Paz might have played role-playing games because in another RPG called Werewolf: The Apocalypse there are three god like creatures, the wyld who is creation, the weaver who is the stabilizer of that creation, and the wyrm who is death or destruction. Now the wyld is like a little kid going around touching things making it grow, if you ever saw Fantasia 2000 think of the girl who represents spring. The weaver tries to stabilize everything the wyld makes, but things don’t stay the same, they change, they grow, this angers the weaver to no end. She, is represented as a spider, gets a plan to trap the wyld so he can’t go around making things change and she can do her job. It works, but not for long, the wyld escapes and the wyrm is then caught in the wyld’s place. So “the spider spins its plots” is a reference (however obscurely) to Werewolf.
It is not expected for this to be actually believe, but this is poetry and poetry as has been taught many times over is up to the interpreter, this was seen. Octavio Paz played role-playing games (or at least heard about them). Now you may take out your torches and pitchforks, just be nice, I bruise easily.
