A small update on how the allotment is shaping up so far!

(A long shot of our allotment)

Well its a Sunday afternoon and we have just returned home after a good couple of hours tending our allotment, last week we had a full week of glorious sunshine which meant we had to water the vegetable plants a couple of times a day as letting them dry out would have been dis-asterous and totally ruined all of our hard work, but today it has done nothing else but rain and the next couple of day are forecast to do the same so the plants are lapping up the extra watering! but the problem is so too are the weed seedlings which waste no time in popping up after a down pour!

We have spent the past couple of days hoeing all of the weeds away in between the rows of potatoes and cabbages just to keep things “spic and span” and we have also been turning over the soil in between other crops that were weed free just to add a little air into the soil and to keep things all nice and crisp.

Its amazing how quickly things grow and already our cabbages and sprout plants are romping away and more or less looking after themselves and the tomato plants in the glass house are doing really well and are already producing plenty of flower trusses which in future months will hopefully bare delicious fruits, the potatoes are now above the ground and have been earthed up several times just to encourage a few extra tubers and the cucumber plants are slowly but surely putting on growth too.

The only crop that is failing miserably is the peas! they have germinated few and far between and just aren’t doing very well at all so luckily we have some growing in a large planter at home which will keep us well supplied with produce, so the ones in the allotment have been discarded and now our young tough crop of sweet corn has replaced it.

Our hens are doing really well and have settled into there new free range home without any problems at all and are already showing there unique personalities and love weeding time as they get all the pickings and trimmings so all in all they have the life of a queen! and they return the favour by giving us large fresh eggs every morning so that’s an added bonus too.

The next month or so will be a very busy time in our vegetable garden as mother nature steps it up a gear and everything will start to come into its own, there will be plenty to pick for the table for ourselves and our families and plenty left over for the adorable hens too.

So as things develop i will keep you all informed of my progress and write of my joys, hopes and disasters in the art of growing your own vegetables……….

……….until then happy gardening to you all.

Thanks for the update, Aaron. Your allotment looks wonderful. I can’t wait to see it in a month or so. Our tomatoes have grown a lot in the last couple of days after a heavy rainfall.
