At what point will theology get out of government?
Dear Oklahoma, you are now, in fact, governed by one of the dumbest, most manipulative, narrow minded and fool hearty legislatures in all of these [supposed] Unites States. The fact that you would allow for the imposition of government interference into personal privacy associated with a person’s body is deplorable, ill-conceived, and wholly un”American”. This is not an attempt to define “what” is alive or “when” it becomes life- leave that out of it- I frankly don’t care. This has to do with theology driven idiocy in the hands of our elected officials and an inability on their part to differentiate societal necessity from old world “boogie-men” theology driven politics. I find it appalling that I live in a state where if you were to canvas 100 people, 88 of them would say they fully support taking the life of a full grown- albeit “evil”- living, breathing, person for crime(s) they’ve commited and, further, would offer to “pull the switch” themselves given the opportunity. When it comes to personal biological decisions in which the government should NEVER have any impact however, we suddenly feel as though it is okay to render our personal choices into the hands of the state. Members of congress who call themselves “conservative” and promote the philosophy of “small government” sure have a funny way of showing their political philosophy. Some would argue that their stance is for small “FEDERAL” government where states rule themselves more freely. Yet I [somehow] fail to see the distinction as to where the autonomy of the state diverges from that of the federal government in instances like this because by empowering the state in this manner you are empowering an authoritative body the means to tell you what you may or may not do in regards to your body. Again– I DON’T CARE what you call “Life”. That argument is old, tired, and [frankly] rubbish to me. This is about allowing a government a foothold into decisions it has no basis in making or having input on and it all begins with decisions like this. “Who can do what with their body?”, “Whom can get married to whom?”, etc. These issues where government has no place being are slowly taking root in the form of religious ideology that will continue to corrupt, condemn, and destroy our society in the name of “moral righteousness” and it makes me seethe with anger and furious objection. The next time I find myself awaiting check-out in my local convenience store, I’ll decide to take it upon myself to inform the obese woman ahead of me that she cannot purchase that 4th Snickers bar because it will contribute to the destruction of her body and I have to take a moral stance against gluttony– ’tis a sin, ya know?– and when she looks on at me, with her neck-less, moldy grapefruit proportioned face and sagging 6XL T-shirt that still fails to obscure her multiple c-section scarred abdomen with the protest: “It’s my body!” I will inform her that it doesn’t really matter– what I believe is morally correct and what she does negatively affects society– she’ll have to live with it. Good afternoon Oklahoma– take your intrusive legislation and shove it straight up your air-tight Judeo-Christian ass.
