The norm that I broke was the gender roles. My boy friend and I went to a family party. We went there wearing the opposite clothes. For example he wore a dress and I wore men’s jeans and a t-shirt. When we arrived, we received many confused stares. I had told my boy friend to go sit with the females and that I would sit with the males. At first they carried on their conversations, but after a while they asked me why we showed up like that. I said, “Like what?”

As I was doing this, I couldn’t help feeling silly to be dressed like that and have my boy friend do that as well. People commented on our dress as they passed us.

In society, it has been imposed that men wear men’s clothing and that women wear women’s. It has been like this for a long time. It gives society order and sense. In the world today, it isn’t uncommon to see a woman wearing jeans. But to take it to the next level where you also interact with men as if you were one of them is very extreme.
