My niece Cami is a handful. She’s always climbing up things, mainly the dinning room table. I’m always asking myself how she got up there. So one day when I saw her attempting to pull the chair out, I didn’t stop her. I sat down and watched her get from the ground to the table top in a matter of seconds. I was so amazed at what I saw.

At 16 months of age, baby Cami, is becoming less of a baby and more of a toddler. The “chubby baby” look is fading into a shape more suitable for the self produced locomotion. That means that she has legs strong enough for walking, but do not work all the time.  When she is standing straight up, Cami is about two and a half feet tall. Her beautiful fair skin is the flawless soft skin that normal babies have. Her hair is a mess of ashy-blond strands curled in tangled jungle of follicles   Her eyes are a reflection of sea water speckled with dots of black. Her lips have a slight purple quality to them. Her little tinny hands and little feet are long and skinny mixed with chubbiness. The overall appearance of her is an pretty baby.

Cami can not get mommy to hold her at the table. Confusion and distress seep onto her reddening face. As if in panic, Cami frantically speed waddles to the nearest vacant chair. With a jumping motion she extends her arms out across the chair, and grabs the other side. Her fragile arms, which are stretched across the entire seat of the chair, look like they could snap at any moment. Her tiny fingers form a death grip on the edge, and her knuckles become the color of sand on a tropical island. Cami pulls herself forward with a great strain, until she is able shift her weight forward onto the chair. Cami does not stop or slow now. Immediately, Cami stands up to face the next part of her task. She turns sideways and lifts one of her scrawny little legs up onto the table. Then Cami pushes of on the back of the chair and uses her momentum to land face down on the table. She is now successfully on the table. Looking up, a huge smile erupts and engulfs her entire face. She finally sees her mommy! Though out the entire process of climbing the chair, she has the look of complete determination. Her movements are shaky and clumsy, but they are also certain and deliberate.
