When my children were very little I taught them to be self sufficient. I taught them how to dress themselves, tie their shoes, take a bath, brush their teeth, get their own water, etc. The list could go on and on. But the two most important things I taught them was to “mind your manners” and “respect your elders”. I had assumed that every parent taught their children these elements. I was wrong.
Life in the midwest, as I am originally from the south, has forced me to look around at the relationship between parent and child. For instance, I watched another 7 year old over the weekend along with her 8 yr old brother. Now I don’t expect other children to say “yes ma’am” but as an elder I do demand respect. While I was in the kitchen making dinner the 7 yr old called me by my name (not Mrs. such and such) and yelled “GIVE ME SOME WATER”! What? Are you serious? This 7 yr. old child demanded that I give her water. She didn’t ask but instead acted as if she were on the exact same level as me. Now I don’t know many adults that would do that. I calmly went to where she was and explained to her where the glasses were and to make herself at home. (don’t you just love southern hospitality). She responded that she was the guest and I should get her some water. Once again, what?
Now I understand that children act differently when they are away from home but in my experience it is usually for the better. I can only imagine what this child is like at home. But whose fault is it? It’s certainly not the childs. She is only doing what has always been accepted. Where do the parents fit in? What have they done to prepare their child for disappointment? Nothing. That’s where I stepped in.
“Here’s the stool to reach the cabinet so that you may get a glass and fill it with water.” And next time, say “please”.
