I had to look after a couple of kids as part of a course I was doing.
The Round Chapel Church is on Powerscroft Road consists of around 40 people. The majority of the people (around 25) in the church are young children aged between 6-10. My Church does not have a vicar or minister so some people take time out of their own to carry out church services. A man who attends the Church regularly called Phil is in charge of running the Sunday school programme once every two weeks at 10:30am. In his Sunday school programmes he teaches younger children how to be good people, having good morale, confidence and how to love God. Phil usually runs the Sunday school with somebody called Sebastian but he didn’t come into Church that day. Phil asked me before the normal Church service and asked me if I would fill into Sebastian’s place to help him take the service I agreed because I did not want the children missing out on their Sunday school.
Me and Phil did not attend the normal Church service because we had to plan our own service quickly. I discussed what my role would be in the Sunday school, I had to ensure that the kids were paying attention in Sunday school and I had to help out with the activities they were going to carry out. After we agreed, we went and called in the children who were waiting outside the main hall waiting to come in.
Before the children came in I arranged some chairs for them to sit on. I took out 27 chairs because me and Phil also needed to sit down. Phil started the service and he talked about helping other people. Some of the younger children started talking while Phil was talking so I quietly tapped the child on the shoulder and told them to keep the noise down which worked because they stopped talking. Some children put their hands up to ask Phil some questions about the theme of what they were learning and Phil answered most of them the best he could.
When we asked the children if they could draw some pictures about helping people we gave them some pens and some paper. Their was a shortage of pens and some were dried up so I asked feel if he could borrow me some money and If I can quickly go to the shop and get some more. Phil gave me some money and I went round the corner to a shop and bought some more then I quickly came back. I shared pens about amongst the children so they were able to draw their pictures.
By completing the Sunday School I learnt that I am quite responsible and that I helped provide the children with a Sunday school lesson. It was also nice because when I worked with the children I got to know their names and no a bit of information about them.
I learnt that you have to be organised to run the Sunday school, me and Phil should have made sure we also had the right equipment to carry out that activity otherwise we could have changed it to something else. I was involved in the service and I feel that I had done my part but I think if I had more of an important role such as talking about what I know about God and some of my experiences I could have been more involved.
