It’s that time again. When the trees shed their leaves and conkers alike. If a conker has ever hit you in the head while walking under a tree, then that’s probably the changing season’s way of telling you that summer has gone and autumn is here.

Conkers have been a popular way of having fun when I was a kid. Back then we didn’t have things like Playstation, Xbox and PSP, but kids still enjoyed themselves. Because it was all about you and your friends threading a piece of string through a conker and using them to try and smash each others conkers. Some people have said that in order to win a game of conkers, you should soak them in vinegar and roast them in the over for a short time. However, a true winner wouldn’t have to cheat.

Back in the days, one of the most popular type of conkers was called the ‘Cheese Cutter’ or ‘Cheesers’. To be challenging someone that has a ‘cheese cutter’ has always been a daunting task because a lot of the time they were likely to win. But if you go first and your conker has a round but curved shape, then you are likely to smash the ’cheese cutter’ or cause enough damage to win.

Here are a selection of conkers collected from under an oak tree.

Nice write-up and great photos, though I’ll never experience it in our country with its two seasons only :-) .
