This is just to introduce my diary. Not quite Faulty Towers (I hope) but there are always intresting people, plenty of laughs and the odd moan. Running a B&B in the South of France might seem like a dream – often it is – but I hope to let you see behind the scenes.

It’s nearly the start of the season and very soon we will be opening our doors to all sorts of people from all over the world.  After a quiet winter with just the two of us living on our little hill, we now face, more or-less, the unknown.

We run a B & B business in the South of France and as we get ready for the first influx of guests I have to report (it’s the same every year) a small gathering of butterflies in my stomach.  We quite literally do not know what to expect for the coming season.

It has been worrying for a while now; we are expecting a down-turn in guest numbers.  There are obviously problems with economies worldwide and many people may decide not to take a holiday.  Many of our guests arrive from the UK and the exchange rate between the Euro and the Pound has meant it has become more expensive than previously for British travellers.

Anyway we do know that we will be meeting people from Switzerland, America, Australia, Holland, Belgium, England, Hong Kong and who knows where else.  I love meeting new people but there is always a slight worry that we might be greeting ‘Mr or Mrs Nasty’.  So far this has never actually happened.  Some guests are more fun than others; on a few occasions I have actually cried when people have left and many have become friends and regular visitors.  What we end up with is more of a ‘house-party’ situation and so I hope that our guests get on well with each other as this can add tremendously to everyone’s holiday.

Not everyone comes to our lovely corner of France just for a holiday.  Some people are researching local history or family roots, some are property hunting, some are staying whilst attending local a weddings or occasionally they may be working locally.  So the mix is varied, the languages diverse and the experience is constantly changing.

I constantly review my bookings list to see who is likely to enjoy the company of whom (many of our guests are well-known to us as they come back frequently) and I try to work out menus for dinner that will suite each and every one.

Sounds like hard work, Evelyn. According to press reports back here in the UK, because of the pound/euro situation, most Brits will be taking their holidays at UK resorts. I look forward to your updates.

What a wonderful life! I have a friend in Bedfordshire who’s looking seriously as moving over to France with her husband and ‘Rusty the Cat’ so I’ve shared your article with her. I’m sure she’ll be just as interested as me in catching up with the news as the season progresses.

Glynis – Paphos Harbour – how lovely – we were married just outside Paphos – some years ago now! If you see tourists wondering where to go next – please suggest France!
