This is just to introduce my diary. Not quite Faulty Towers (I hope) but there are always intresting people, plenty of laughs and the odd moan. Running a B&B in the South of France might seem like a dream – often it is – but I hope to let you see behind the scenes.

So what is must I do to prepare?  Well the gardening is well under way.  We have about 7 acres of garden to keep, which is far more than a full-time job!  The huge house that we use for the B & B (set in the garden a stone throws from the house we use all year round) needs to be opened up after being closed and shuttered for six months.  This huge house will all need cleaning and airing.  All the plumbing will need checking and this year I have promised to re-paint the kitchen (rather regretting that now!).

The swimming pool has just been uncovered and all the mechanical elements need to be tested and the heating switched on, the water tested and salt added.  All the pool and terrace furniture will be brought out from undercover and one or two of the metal tables will need another coat of my very special ‘lavender-coloured’ paint.  Somehow it does not feel like work if you can paint things a lovely shade of lavender!

There is a plan to upgrade a couple of the beds and this is going to mean a trip to Toulouse (which is quite an adventure for us).  We will take a trailer and bring back whatever we decide to purchase as delivery in France can be very expensive.

I need to start to stock the larder – all the essentials for a summer of breakfasts.  We also do lunches and evening meals and so I will need to check all my pots and pans, see what I am going to need replacing and start to fill my cupboards.  Maybe a quick read of my French cookery books will be called for and of course a trip (or two) to the vineyards to fill the wine cellars!

So what I need right now is a list and to start to get all this sorted out before the end of the month when it all starts.  I hope to keep a regular diary about the antics and adventures of the season, so if you fancy following how it all goes, look out for updates about my B & B.

Sounds like hard work, Evelyn. According to press reports back here in the UK, because of the pound/euro situation, most Brits will be taking their holidays at UK resorts. I look forward to your updates.

What a wonderful life! I have a friend in Bedfordshire who’s looking seriously as moving over to France with her husband and ‘Rusty the Cat’ so I’ve shared your article with her. I’m sure she’ll be just as interested as me in catching up with the news as the season progresses.

Glynis – Paphos Harbour – how lovely – we were married just outside Paphos – some years ago now! If you see tourists wondering where to go next – please suggest France!
