My experiences driving.
I finally enrolled myself in a driving school. Not that I don’t know how to drive yet. I do. I started driving since I was in high school. I started with a “pawis-steering” Tamaraw FX with my Uncle as my coach. No formal lessons. Just a combination of what I’ve observed from my Dad when he drives and an immediate hands-on driving tutorial (I actually tricked my Uncle into believing that I already had an experience in driving, LOL). It turned out fine, actually. Guess I’m a natural fast-learner, hehe.
When the SUV was sold, I moved to a Mitsubishi L300 van because I was not allowed to drive the new car. It was definitely harder driving a “flat-nosed” vehicle. You had to do a lot of “calculations”, which I sucked at. Needless to say, I scratched the van with an immobile barricade in one of the streets of the Metro. Traumatized, I stopped for — I don’t know — five or six years. I used to be a good driver (I think). I was kinda reckless though, given that I was still young and somewhat immature.
Then about a month or so ago, I’ve decided to conquer my “fear”. So I started driving again — under the supervision of our driver. With a few humiliating bloopers on the side, it’s actually okay given that I haven’t driven in years and that I didn’t need the aid of the driver to help me refresh my “driving skills”. Anyhow, enough of “Sansan’s Traumatic Driving Experiences”…
So I enrolled in a driving school (that’s one of the conditions my parents gave before I can have a car) and started with my lessons yesterday — for three hours straight! We went as far as Fairview, Libis, EDSA, Quezon Ave, and back. I practiced making U-turns and, my most feared part, handling “hanging” — in Quezon Avenue! My knuckles were whiter than ever…my left leg hurt for having to step on the clutch a lot of times…but it was definitely worth it! I learned a lot and I had a lot of fun, too! I can’t wait “til my next driving lesson! And I can”t wait to get the car and finally drive myself to work! =)
