4/24/11 entry talking about why religion isn’t as bad as I’ve been thinking… and wondering about recipes for a good life.
So after watching my 10th episode in 2 days of The Mentalist (cops show with a very intelligent hypnotist) I decided that religion really isn’t that bad. This decision happened when they were interviewing someone who had committed a crime in their past, but now had found God. I feel that religion isn’t bad not because I want to believe in it or any of that, but because A.) it gives people something to do, something to live for. and B.) It can help people. I’m not saying it’s the best solution but if someone is having a pretty bad life, it can provide solutions. Obviously there are some side effects, like believing in something that I personally don’t think exists, but so does Chemotherapy… and just because a drug has bad side effects, doesn’t mean it’s bad overall if it stops something worse.
Who am I to try to look down on someone who can believe in something so fully? I thought my personal recipe for the best time was music, movies, and games, but I’ve been doing that all this weekend, and I still feel empty. In fact I feel worried. I mean, trading wise, I’m making enough to pay the rent in a week.. but my goals of making a million in a year seem realllllly far away. Maybe it’s unrealistic, but I still can’t see myself doing the average 9-5 job and taking home an average paycheck with this boring life story. I also feel like if any of those beliefs “Think and Grow Rich” or “The Secret” are at all true, I’d be moving much quicker towards my goals. It’s something I think about every day. Here’s the test, where are the results? It’s not like I haven’t been putting in the effort during the past month. I’m starting to think they’re all crap. One more thing you’d like to believe, but deep down you know it’s just a fun lie. Like magic, and ESP.
