They came and took away my garbage can. If you don’t pay, it don’t stay!
I am yet another causality of the fledging economy. My garbage can was recently foreclosed. I know what you are thinking….huh? they foreclosed on your garbage can, don’t you mean your house? Nope, my house is safe for now; it was my garbage can that was taken away from us.
Through the difficult times many have been having recently, with the increase of the cost of living….i.e. cost of food, medical insurance, gas, utilities and the like, families have had to make some tough decisions when it comes to what bills they will pay and which ones will have to wait.
When paying our bills each month, my wife and I always have to make sure that we first make our mortgage payment, and then the necessary utilities bills, and next, of course, food for our family. The least of our concern out of all of our monthly bills was our garbage bill. Don’t get me wrong, we will pay the money we owe on the overly past due garbage bill, but it was not a matter of life or death, or the type of necessity to maintain a reasonable comfort level. This particular monthly bill was one that if they “shut off” or take away, life will still be tolerable.
Before I go on, let me tell you more about the day, our garbage can was foreclosed. We were several months behind on the bill, and the day came when THEY came. My wife and I were both at work, and my youngest daughter was home…. THEY knocked on the door and my daughter answered it…they said if “if you don’t pay, it can’t stay” well my daughter of course is not in charge of the household expenses, so she said we were not home. THEY then loaded up our garbage can and took it away. I liked to think that she just stood there in the door way with a tear slowly moving down her face while the truck hauled it down the street, but I think she most likely had her ipod in her ears and just shrugged her shoulders and went back into the house. She has enough worries, her being a freshman in high school and all.
By the way, who are THEY? THEY are always the group of people who have to do the dirty work, or they say things we are supposed to believe. People always say things like, “that is what they say” or “they say that you are not supposed to do this or that” or “they are coming to get you right away!” That is another story in itself and I will have to talk about some other time.
Any way, with all of the tough decisions we all have to make in times like this, I guess if I had to go without one of life’s luxuries, it was garbage service. Is there a government bailout for garbage service? Can I get a stimulus check that I can share with our garbage carrier? I think not, but alas, we will pay this bill eventfully and get our garbage can back.
Things could be worse of course, people are losing their jobs, their homes, even their very lively hood, and so if this is all we lost for now, we are pretty lucky.
I am a firm believer in positive thinking, and I believe good will always follow difficult times, so we are still very lucky….
As for our garbage can? I picture it is sitting with other garbage can’s that were recalled from their line of duty. The container is probably getting a bit dusty now… Wait! Maybe this isn’t the case at all! Now that I think about it, it may be sitting in front of someone else’s house now! Sitting there smiling, getting its full, and happy to be in service again! What a traitor! I bet it doesn’t even miss us! Sorry…. Just a little can envy
