How I did on my gifted project.
The whole second semester of gifted was such an outstanding time period. At the beginning of this project, I was a little skeptical and I thought that I four months was too long for a project like this. But as time passed, I realized how much detail and depth the expo would require. At this time I realized that I would really need to stop procrastinating and I would need to really buckle down. The time that I was really pushed to finish this project were the two weeks before the real gifted expo. I stayed up to about midnight almost for almost the whole school week to finish in time. The main reason that I selected my energy topic was the rising oil prices. In every class I had this year; I have heard one of my teachers complain about the rising oil prices. I thought that this would be a great topic to research on that would someday help society in the future. My project wasn’t really focused on solar energy before the presentation to the freshman. My project was envisioned on creating a battery of just chemicals, but then I focused my project on how it could further help society. I have no regrets for this project. I think I could have been a little bit more prepared, but other than that I don’t really think I needed to do anything different. One of the biggest problems I had for my project was powering my fan for my final project.
I finally worked out the kinks by using a series circuit for my battery so the fan would work. To avoid those problems I could have learned about voltage and current balance before I started to work on the fan. I didn’t have a turning point, just a continuous effort on my project. One of the things I know that I did wrong was accidentally explain to a person about a vertical and horizontal wind power system. I accidentally switched the two. I could have been a little bit more prepared and I should’ve talked in the mirror or just practice a little bit more so I would not be nervous. I had a great relationship with my mentor. We met almost every week, and we had a great time learning together. I was helped by my peers a lot. They were especially helpful when I was decorating my board. I do think that I have learned a lot about my topic. My mentor even suggested that I learned some things that even some AP chemistry students did not learn fully. Although I was not able to use all my new info during the expo because it would confuse a lot of people, it was still fulfilling to learn about.
