A light-hearted look at the UK/USA homesick blues and possible cures.

I am a Brit living in the USA and finally after nearly 2 years i feel like my roots are starting to take. It took much gnashing of teeth, love for my husband, those peanut chunks of heaven otherwise known as Paydays, the odd sprinkling of Desperate Housewives, oh and my mum in laws fried chicken and home made carrot cake, very understanding traffic cops and well lets be honest a bit of a lobotomy.

I was amazed at how suddenly it was the little stuff that i missed which made me most homesick. The sound of Big Ben on the BBC as it heralded the 10.00 o clock news, English bacon, driving on the proper side of the road (only joking), the Sunday Papers, The Archers ( radio play which plays every Sunday) and so the list goes on.

I actually thought that homesickness was the domain of those kids on school trips who started crying as soon as the bus left the school car park. I think i can even remember uttering to one particularly homesick sobbing friend  those immortal words “For Gods Sake Pull Yourself Together!” Ouch. Well those words came back to haunt me with a vengeance and i apologise now for my lack of sympathy all of those years ago.

So yes i still get homesick but not very often and when i am feeling sorry for myself i like to eat a boring old white bread bland dublin cheddar cheese sandwich with HP Sauce. In fact if any other homesick Brits are reading this get out the chedder. It helps. Honestly. And if it doesnt well  what can i say “For Gods Sake Pull Yourself Together!”
