Maria Hill is a former member of the United States Armed Forces and interim Executive Director of S.H.I.E.L.D in the absence of Nick Fury at the end of the “Secret War”. The Secret War began when SHIELD learns that the Latverian Prime Minister in the aftermath of Doctor Victor Von Doom’s dictatorship plans to supply a cache of super-villions with advanced technology. Nick Fury took this information to the President of the United States who refused to allow SHIELD to overthrow the Latverian regime due to its sponsorship and recognition by the U.S Government. Fury is outraged and within a year’s time a super-villian known as Von Bardas and an army of cyborgs unleash their horde upon New York City but the superheroes of SHIELD stop them and immediately after learn why Fury did not warn them, he was using a life model decoy like a clone of himself. Fury declares that it was neccessity and that because of this disaster, he must go into hiding. This is when Maria Hill is appointed to replace him as Interim Executive Director. As Director, her primary mission is one thing: to end SHIELD’s support of the superheroes. However, she soon realizes her efforts her vain due to Captain America’s “champion status”  allowing him to form any team for any mission and Spider-woman’s ability to achieve any files the Avengers want; therefore, Hill gives up her mission. Hill is still loyal to the interests of the United States above all else, but as a result is  not neccessarily directly loyal to SHIELD and the Avengers. However, she does do some things to help the Avengers such as preventing the President of the United States from nuking an island that the Avengers are currently on; however, the Avengers are still weary of her and even suspect to be involved in some illegal activities.

      Ultimately, the character of Maria Hill as played by How I Met Your Mother Star Cobie Smulders should be one of the most interesting characters to watch in the movie as she should be one of those characters in which no one is entirely sure what side she is playing on. Majority of the times, it seems like she is against everything that the Avengers stand for and do, but on the otherhand she tries to help out and even rescues them from danger. How Director Joss Whedon will write this character is thus very interesting and ultimately how Cobie will handle playing a bit of a villian will be interesting. Finally, all of us How I Met Your Mother fans are used to seeing Cobie Smulders play the role of the funny, charming, sexy character of Robin, but it looks like she will be playing a completely different character in this movie and thus we may be able to see Cobie’s true acting potential come out.
