You never know what a kid is going to say next.

The other day I purchased a medium sized container of cut up watermelon because it is one of my grandson’s favorite foods and I knew he would be spending most of the weekend with me.

He came home with me Friday night after he got off the school bus, and being typical kid, he checked out the refrigerator before he took off his coat.

“Watermelon, is that for me?”

“Yes, I knew you’d want it.”

“Wow, thanks, Gramma!”

The next morning I was sound asleep when Zach woke me up.

“Gramma, I ate all the watermelon.”

“Okay,” I said and went back to sleep.

“Gramma, wake up.  I ate all the watermelon and I want to go home.”

“Okay,” I said and went back to sleep.

“Gramma, wake up!  I ate all the watermelon and I want to go home.  Here’s your shoes!” he said dropping them on my stomach.

I opened one eye and looked at him.  He had his coat on.

“What’s your big hurry?” I asked him.

“Well,” he said.  “The snow is melting!”

“That’s wonderful news, what does that have to do with anything?”

“I want to play in the snow.  I know you won’t let me, and neither will Mom.  But, I can get Dad to say okay.  I’ve got to get home and get to Dad before Mom has a chance to say ‘no’”

I got dressed and drove him home, I wanted to see the manipulative little bugger get his way.

We went in the house and Zach quietly watched TV and played with his legos.  It wasn’t long and my daughter (his mother) left the room.

Zach pounced.  “Dad, can I go out and play in the snow?”

“What?”  Jerry said taking off his headphones.

“Can I play outside?”

“I don’t care!” Jerry said and put his headphones back on his head.

So, Zach got his way that day.  He ate all the watermelon, and played in the melting, sloppy snow all afternoon.

He’s just learning the basics of survival and influence. He could grow up to be a great politician. Okay, not a politician; but you know what I mean.

I just loved this story. I guess that is what I have to look forward to as my grandson grows.
