Throw away your rules when it comes to art because they are the greatest enemy of all.

My husband and I are both artists. He is an amazing musician and creator of the written word and I love to sing and am also a creator of the written word. We recently had a conversation about the rules and regulations of commercialized art, be it music, art, or word. We realized those who make it in the big leagues follow a pattern of conformity.  We came to the conclusion that when it comes to our foundation we seek to understand the greatest creator of all time. God!

There are those who create art, because they are artists

There are those who create art in order to become a success

To seek improvement in any art when it comes to HOW something should be done, is tragedy. Art cannot be Art and also be Science. Art cannot be copied. In poetry every Name, Label, and Type of poem comes from a great Artist.

For example a Haiku became popular after its first publication in Japan.  A Haiku was given its name by a Japanese writer named Masaoka Shiki.  To write a Haiku does not mean you are correct in form but rather means you copied Masaoka Shiki in his form of creation.

Those who create art do so without ANY form of rules they must obey. There are no rules in Art and if you are someone who follows the patterns society has dictated upon Art you have truly missed the point of Art.

For those who would dare critique a poem my husband and I would have this to say this is what a critique is really saying.

-Because all creation comes from God and cannot be taught.

We would never dare tell God that all mountains should be similar or made a certain way but a critique would.

Dear God,

The hills of Afghanistan are outdated and when I see the clouds constantly change I get bored with them. I don’t like that people have 2 arms and 2 legs they have had these for long enough and they should be modernized to 4. God, love is ancient and stupid in today’s age and the colors of Earth are dull with all the brown. The colors of fall clash and don’t you ever see there is just way to much water everywhere and everyone should follow the same guidelines to living. I think children need to move on beyond the crayon and the Fur on animals has just been done for long enough ect..

Perhaps when we tell someone what they have created is wrong we should consider God himself must be wrong also. God designed the notion of creativity in the FIRST PLACE.

So in closing may man realize that art is not a pattern, and has no rules or standards.

However it has many past lessons we can copy and follow.

I LOVED this!! It is the first of your writing that I’ve read. I did read that you are a published author and am anxious to read your writing. I like the way that this was written and the choice of topic.

I agree, Colleen. What is art to me, may not be art to you, but it is such a personal thing so who has the right to criticize?
Very well put. Is your husband’s work on here, also?

Very powerful statements offering such truth. As you stated, conformity has it’s place for copying and following. It should not rob one of his creativity!

Many of the most successful artists were creators and innovators. You are so true.
