This is the start of a series of journal entries that I have submitted about my experiences with business and the management environment.
There are many choices that I have to pick from for the organization I will be reflecting on through this course. I have worked and been a part of a vast range of companies and organizations, from one of the smallest Assemblies of God state districts to the third largest company in the world. I plan on journaling about my most current organization for the sole reason that I believe this would be a good place to write down what is going on within my experiences that could reflect this course directly. This organization is the General Electric Company or simply known as GE.
To give a brief history that would give GE its due justice would take more than just three paragraphs so I will focus directly on my area and facility that I am working in. I am employed by GE Aviation in Erlanger Kentucky. GE Aviation is in the infrastructure section of GE and we produce aircraft engines for the US Military and commercial airliners throughout the world. My specific facility is a distribution center which is another name for an extremely large warehouse.
My work with GE is pretty much dealing with logistics and the flow of goods. Our Erlanger facility is the size of 6 football fields, in square footage. It is an extremely large complex and I was amazed when I first stepped inside of this facility. This specific facility employees around 200 – 250 employees which range from hourly and shift workers, management, engineers, and co-ops/interns (like my self). The complexity of our facility is very dense and we have several different departments even within our own facility. To give one phrase that explains what we do would have to be, parts come in and parts come out.
I started my work with GE on May 13th, 2008. We have a close family friend who works with GE Aviation in Evandale Ohio and with some good networking he landed me this internship in Erlanger Kentucky. So far it has been an amazing experience and I haven’t minded the nice paychecks I am not used to seeing. I am 1 of 8 interns at the Erlanger facility, I am 1 out of 400 interns GE Aviation based out of Evandale Ohio will be having for the summer rotation and again I am 1 out of thousands of interns GE will be employing for this summer rotation. I hope you can see how large of a business GE is, as it is truly the third largest company in the world.
