This is my second journal entry of a series of journal entries that I have submitted about my experiences with business and the management environment and this one is about diversity.
I have not seen anyone that has gotten any benefits that others have not gotten because of different layers of diversity other people may or may not have. Sometimes I get left out of meetings and other worksite functions due to my inexperience because I am new. This is partly my fault because I am not aware of these events but I also think it has something to do with the management and me being a new worker. I believe they should inform me about these events instead of me having to learn the hard way.
There are a lot of things people can learn from working with other types of people in the work place. Above the general knowledge of other cultures that you can learn from people you can gain knowledge on how to react and be around other people. People from other cultures do not behave or react the same way we do to different situations and we need to learn and understand that. And in the end you just become a better person that is in touch with reality more than other people that think everyone is just like them.
To be a more effective manager is to understand people are different, act differently and do their jobs in a different way. You cannot treat everyone the same generic way and expect to have fantastic results from your work force. For me to be an effect leader I need to take a personal stance with each and every employee I am managing. I need to know their ends and outs and what I can do to make them the most effective employee possible. There is no cookie cutter employee and there shouldn’t be. That is how I stand on what I would do to become a better leader in a diverse work place.
