This is my sixth journal entry of a series of journal entries that I have submitted about my experiences with business and the management environment and this one is about making decisions in the business world.

Decisions are to be made on a daily basis on my line of work.  Every day there are different situations and scenarios where I have to use my judgment to make the best possible decision and to ensure the productivity of my complex.  I rarely ever make any large decision as my job consists of a lot of smaller decisions (i.e. deciding a location to slot a certain part).  The best example of one of the most important decisions I had to make was when I decided to label a certain box with a country of origin that was not on the box.

Before I go into my decision I need to explain how our facility works.  I work in a distribution center for GE Aviation, which pretty much means we are a big warehouse where parts come in and come out.  Parts are to be slotted individually by maker and by country of origin.  So when I come across a part that we do not know the country of origin I have to do some investigating try to figure out the problem and get the part slotted into a location.

The problem came when this certain part had two countries listed on the box.  It said it was assembled in Mexico with parts from the United States.  This was an interesting situation because we rarely come across pieces that have this complex of a history.  I had to figure out what country to label this box and where to slot it.  I started off by trying to figure out where more of the costs and happening.  I thought that if we produce this part in two countries then the country of origin would probably be the location where the majority of the costs are incurred.  I went into CAS, it is a software application where I can find the costs associated with each individual part and piece, to figure out this question I had.  I ended up figuring out that this part had more costs from the United States than from Mexico.   Therefore I decided to slot this part as United States for the country of origin.

With my decision I made everything turned out like I expected it to.  I found a good location where this part could be slotted and we had no problems working with the system.  Everything went smoothly and there were no errors or interference.
