What it must be like to be a maple tree.

I often find myself wondering what life would be like for different countries, animals, and plants. Today I was just thinking about what it is like to be a tree. Now I don’t want to be just any tree but a maple is my choice.

It is the beginning of spring and as I awake I can feel something drilling into my trunk. I gaze down to see a human drilling a hole into me. He wants my precious sap to make syrup with. I try to scream but to no avail, the hole has pierced me and my sap is running freely from my trunk. It would have been nice if he had of asked me before he did this to me, but I try to understand the human logic sometimes. The hole really doesn’t affect me and I know they just love eating my sweet nectar for breakfast.

A month or so down the road, the human has taken the spicket out of my trunk and once again I am whole. My leaves now have began to open and are the palest green in the forest. New leaves are so tender and pretty in the sunshine. The south winds have begun to blow and as I sway slowly in the midst of this wonderful day, my thoughts are what a wonderful day to be alive.

I live deep in the forest so don’t have a lot of company. The animals pass me by from time to time and sometimes even climb up my branches to build a nest for their families. Here comes a gray squirrel. They moved in a few weeks ago and are waiting for the birth of their little ones soon. They don’t hurt me and give me lots of company.

The summer has arrived and with the passing of spring the sun has become much warmer now. My leaves are fully open and I have once more become a grand Maple tree. I was visited today by another human. He sat below my canopy to guard him from the hot sun. As he sipped on a bottle of water I took great pride in keeping him cool and safe. I always have open arms to help protect the animals and the humans of the world.

The summer went by so quickly and now I can feel autumn in the air. It is cooler at night and the days have become much shorter than a few weeks ago. My leaves are beginning to turn their true color…the color of red. it will take a bit of time but soon I will be in full color. People come from miles around come to see what I possess. The north east is well known for me and my fellow trees. Each year thousands of humans flock to see us. The mountains are so beautiful with all the shades from each of my fellow tree friends. Some of us turn red, some yellow, and some orange and with the views of us all together it is quite a site to see. It looks as if an artist has dabbed all the colors onto a canvas. So striking it is!

As autumn passes and winter begins my leaves have all fallen off of me and I stand in this forest naked and cold. The squirrel family don’t come out to visit much any more due to the cold. I try to keep the cold from my insides but it is a piercing cold that I cant seem to get rid of. It is now time for me to stay quiet till spring. Ya I will blow from the frigid north winds, but my beautiful leaves have left me and now I look gray. It has been quite a spring, summer and fall. Now I am in need of a long rest. I will not die from the cold but I will kind of hibernate until the warm spring days come see me again. I hope you have enjoyed what I have had to offer you, and on that note I bid you goodnight!

Call me crazy – but I believe every living thing feels something and wants to say something when a human hurts it.
