Upon discovering a diary which belonged to a girl named Alice, we are thrown into the unique perspective of the world which revolves around her.
October 14th, Wednesday
Last Saturday, by fate, I was shown the path towards you again.
I met an old primary schoolmate of ours, from him I got to know that you were now in Singapore.
I was overjoyed that I managed to find you again, since you were one of my best friends in primary school; not to mention my first date.
I took the advancement class and skipped to Year 5, I left my old school crowd and ended up sitting in a strange classroom with strangers who looked at me weirdly. It was hard coping with a bunch of older kids but somehow I managed it by proving myself worthy to be in the same class with them.
You were sitting next to me, at first you were irritating, but slowly I came to regard you as a rival in sports which I prided myself at. Yet, after I lost a race to you, I started seeing you in new light. You were cheeky, funny, witty and great to get along with. You didn’t see me as a weird addition to the class but rather welcomed me at it.
Gradually due to similar interest and the shared sense of humor, we got to be close friends. We shared a platonic relationship, a complicated brother/sister/crush/buddies bond we had. Till one day, we found out that we frequent the same library and were extremely fond of this habit. It was then you asked me out, right there in the classroom, amidst all our classmates, right in the middle of a break during class.
Without a second thought, you turned around in your seat, eyes twinkling with excitement, you said: “Hey, let’s go to the library together this Saturday.” Sure it might sound something like a study date but practically it is the first time a guy asked me out alone.
Being the proud, stubborn yet extremely shy person I was, although I was startled, I coolly accepted your invitation. I was thrilled that you asked me out but my spirits was dampened by the mumblings of gossips and rumors starting around us.
I was in a rebellious tom-boy age then, wanting to prove equality between sexes. However, that Saturday I dressed up more carefully than usual. I wore my favorite red & white striped shorts and a light T-shirt. My parents were eager to know who their daughter was going out with, they teased me but I acted like it was nothing big. While on the inside, I was actually anticipating the morning to start.
