I wanted to share with all of you a story about my little kitty, Sassy. Sassy came into my life in 1997. I was in a relationship with a man that had a daughter.

His daughter would come visit every two weeks.  He decided that she should get a kitten for her 4th birthday.  Personally, I didn’t agree with this.  It was so simple for me.  The daughter was having a really hard time with the fact that mommy and daddy were no longer together and she was having alot of behavior related issues to that.  So, I didn’t really feel that she should have ANY kind of animal.  Especially since they are so dependent on us to be their protectors and their voices because they can’t really “talk” to us and let us know how they are feeling.

Unfortunately, I did not win that battle.  The next thing I knew was that Sassy had come into our lives, from a pet store no less.  This, after I made it very clear that I would have preferred that he adopt from a local shelter!  Personally, I prefer to do this and help save a life.  Regardless, Sassy was there!

I quickly realized that Sassy had been taken from her momma and the nursing part of their development too soon.  She was not able to eat or drink or poop properly.  She had alot of troubles with balance, coordination and other things.  I had to feed her with a small spoon and help her to drink her water from an eye dropper.  She was just too young.  Afterwards, I would have to wait about an hour and then show her where to pee and poop.  She was a bit confused at first, but slowly began to understand where she was supposed to go.  I even had to “teach” Sassy how to play.  She had no concept of what toys were or how to play with them.

So, during the next three months, I literally began to live on the living room couch with Sassy.  I literally did almost everything with her and for her to help her to adjust to her new life with us and our home.  She had alot of problems getting onto and off the couch.  So, I would wake up when I heard her crying and put her on the couch with me.  Then, she would nuzzle into my arms and fall asleep.  Very content and feeling very safe.  I wanted her to feel safe, secure and above all else, completely and unconditionally LOVED!!
