Are you an adult with attention deficit hyperactive disorder or do you have an ADHD teen? Then you know the trauma of this disability. My daughter has ADHD and this is a poem she wrote when she was about 17.

My Locked Up Heart Set Free

Dark clouds fly overhead.

My locked up heart,

Fallen apart,

Still hopes a door opens.

Tall grasses call,

Sway,

And say,

Come, be free.

My daughter felt hopeless at times because she had a lot of trouble coping with the stress of confusion regarding the schedule of her school work. She fell behind her first three years of high school because her mind got bogged down.  She even had to cut down to two subjects a day, then she finally got her act together and figure out she had to make a schedule, but this was her final year and there was not enough time to catch up.  As a result she was timed out of home school and she had to get her GED.  She did get her GED and  is now studying opera and is in her second year.  She does not have to take drugs for this, but she has to be very focused.

When you are a teen, ADHD can be devastating and debilitating.   As I said previesly, my daughter had to learn to write down what courses she had and what subject she was going to do at each hour.  She was home school, but a teen going to public or private school can also write down  her classes- what times they are and what she/he has to study at home.  She/he should write down a complete schedule of home and school activities for each day and follow it closely.

If you’re a parent of an ADHD child and your reading this, tell your teen about it, but please don’t order him/her to do it.  This kind of teen needs to be independent and respected as an important person in your household.
