When we moved into our rented home in sunny California in April of 2008 I anticipated a lot of changes to spruce up the property! Since I’m paralyzed on my right side from head to toe I had to be choosy on the projects I could tackle!
The place I would be spending a lot of time was the red brick front porch with a built in planter running the eight foot length of the porch! It was an unsghtly mass of ugly, overgrown weeds and I imagined some thing that would be attractive to our family, guests and the passersby on the street!
So I started pulling the weeds and bringing the dirt back to it’s natural state!
When that was accomplished I was ready to start!

I mentally plotted how many Rose bushes would fit in my 8 foot space!  I came up with the lucky number 7!  Five in the dirt and 2 in pots one on each end!  Since shopping was an inconvenience to me I used a mail order nursery to choose my flowery gems!  They are better roses when bought directly from a nursery!  My favorite nursery is in South Carolina because they make sure their products are the best!  I ordered a specific color and type in 2008 and when it bloomed it was beautiful but not what I ordered!  So they told me the following Spring they would ship the right rose!  Yeah right?  Guess what…they did!

I looked at their shiny catalog with all the different colors and styles and chose 7 of the finest!  The Sweetness is a beautiful shaded light purple which grows upward with a sweet scent to please the senses!  This beauty would be on one end of my porch!  I chose a dark red growing up  for the other end with a bold inviting scent !  To fill in the red brick planter I chose a bright yellow bare root that doesn’t climb but produces blossoming blooms most of the year with a mesmerizing scent!  Next to that I planted an orange and white beauty that dazzles the eyes and tickles the nose with a  scent that  spikes your romantic imagination!!  The next floral splendor was a pink and white rose with tantalizing colors and a Heaven sent scent!!  The next is an almost pure white bare root with speckles  of yellow  and a “Down Home” inviting scent!  The last and best is the bare root bright red with fabulous huge blossoms making every day Valentines Day with a strong scent of Love!

My 7 babies who I prune and coddle with water and love have taken well to their new surroundings and have grown up and out after their 3rd year of love forming my  picture window of Roses!
