Eight years ago I helped out a raven with a weak wing by putting leftovers out for it. It brought it’s mate eventually…
The beauty of ravens is breathtaking. Okay, so they are in garbage cans making a mess and other sloppy stuff, but, they are very intelligent and family oriented.
I was captured by them after reading about the history of ravens at the London Tower. If you Google it you’ll find how the ravens used to fly around the chopped off heads that were stuck on the sharp posts on top of the tower…Gory…the good old days.
There really are ravens still there and are well taken care of. I’ve read that their wings are clipped so they don’t fly away.
Although, my house isn’t anything like London Tower, it reminds me of a combo of two famous homes you’ve must have seen on TV. The Addams Family, and Green Acres. Somewhat a little of this and a little of that from each.
I watched the raven, I call Wingy and it’s mate Buddy for years now. They stick together so happily it’s almost strange. I watch these two birds plan out their days and that includes coming by my house on and off even just to play with a black walnut that fell off the tree.
They are comical. They’ll take that walnut and put it on the paver where I put food for them. Then, they dance around, hopping, squawking. It’s hysterical to see them doing this. If I’m not here they’ll put whatever, for example last week a wrapper from a chocolate bar on that paver for me to see they were here. They recently dug a hole about 6″ x 4″ round and at least 6″ deep for the water to roll into when I mix water in with leftovers. So, let’s say they trained me to fill it up with fresh water for them daily. I’ve seen them carry some special delicacies to dip into their water hole from time to time. Reminds me of dunking donuts into coffee. I really could do without seeing some of that action. Yet, I love my Wingy and Buddy.
It was a ferocious beginning of spring when they were taking care of their new babies. The storms made it feel as if winter was back. I’d watch them take food and fly away with it. I thought for sure the babies wouldn’t even survive such a fierce chill and the wicked winds.
