Alumnus by the way, is the singular for Alumni, apparently VIF insisted they use the correct terms when describing past teachers in the program. I didn’t give a crap, I just called ‘em old hands…

Millennium Hotel, Chapel Hill

The bus left the hotel in NC early on Thursday morning to travel on up to VA.  I sort of felt we were embarking on this great adventure, but now, having lived here a while, all of three days no less, we were seasoned America visitors. In any case, we only travelled a few hundred miles first heading East then North on I-95, seen one freeway, seen them all.  We stopped for a watering break just over the VA border and most people made a beeline for Maccas, but four of us decided to avoid the crush and walk a  bit and go to Burger King, or Hungry Jacks as it’s known in Down Under. There’s a story going around in Australia and I don’t know that it’s true, but I will perpetuate it here as well.

The tale goes that some smart-arse Aussie jetsetter was in America back in the 50s or so and he saw the fast food chains just starting to take off in USA.  Being a pretty astute Aussie jetsetter he figured that eventually the big chains will want to expand into Australia so he hatched his devious plan.  When he arrived back in Australia he registered various business names using the names he’d seen in America ergo, McDonalds, Burger King, etcetera.  Sure enough Maccas was the first to come down under and try to register their name.  Of course the name was already taken by said enterprising Aussie jetsetter, and of course he was willing to sell the name in the spirit of the ANZUS alliance plus a cool million dollars.  The guy was rubbing his hands with glee and set about waiting for the next one.  When Burger King arrived to do the same thing, as they do, he tried the same thing as well but BK wouldn’t bite, and they simply came up with the name Hungry Jack’s for their Australian operation, and Bob’s your uncle.

Anyway, back on the bus, it was pretty much like a coach trip in Australia and I had a really good chat with Allison from Boonah near Brisbane and we clicked pretty well, talking about school, life in general and most importantly, Church.  I hope we get to go to some services together.
